NFLPA: Meriweather Contrite For Comments

Nov 4, 2014 9:10 PM

Brandon Meriweather was contrite for his comments to the media about injuring other players.

"I spoke to Brandon. He is passionate about the game, and I know he is sorry for what he said," NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said in a statement. "He is concentrating on helping his team win the rest of the season. Brandon knows that all players have a responsibility to each other and to play within the rules of the game."

Meriweather was suspended for illegal hits against the Chicago Bears.

"I guess I just got to take people's knees out," Meriweather said. "That's the only way. I would hate to end a guy's career over a rule, but I guess it's better other people than me getting suspended for longer. You just have to go low now, man. You've got to end people's careers. You got to tear people's ACLs and mess up people's knees. You can't hit them high anymore."

Goodell: Aldon Smith's Rehab To Help Him In Suspension Decision

Aug 5, 2014 4:54 AM

Aldon Smith's decision to seek alcohol treatment could work in his favor when the NFL makes a decision on his suspension for off-the-field-issues.

Smith entered treatment on Sept. 23.

"Certainly, the issue here isn't to discipline players. It's to stop the behavior," Roger Goodell said. "Aldon has voluntarily said, 'I need help.'

"We're obviously there to support him, and the 49ers did a great job getting him into a facility to try to get help. We support that."
