The St. Louis Rams called Brett Favre to gauge his interest in returning to the NFL following the season-ending injury to Sam Bradford.
Favre is now a 44-year-old grandfather and hasn't played since December 2010.
One source familiar with the Rams' conversations said that if Favre took them up on their interest, "it could break Twitter."
Favre said he's in football shape, but ruled out a final return to the NFL.
"It's flattering, but you know there's no way I'm going to do that," he said.
The St. Louis Rams will not pursue Vince Young or Tim Tebow to add depth at quarterback following the season-ending injury to Sam Bradford.
Jeff Fisher coached Young during their time together with the Tennessee Titans.
Young was with the Green Bay Packers in training camp before being released, while Tebow was with the New England Patriots.
The St. Louis Rams relocated from Los Angeles in 1995, but interest remains high in California.
The Rams' website reportedly receives more traffic from California than from Missouri.
The Rams could leave St. Louis after the 2014 season as the team continues to struggle to renovate Edward Jones Dome.
Stan Kroenke, owner of the Rams, is a native of Missouri but also owns Arsenal in London.
Sam Bradford tore his ACL during Sunday's loss by the St. Louis Rams to the Carolina Panthers.
The only other quarterback on the Rams' roster is Kellen Clemens.
Michael Silver of NFL Network reports that the Rams have internally discussed signing Tim Tebow, though a deal is unlikely.
Sam Bradford suffered a left knee injury and will undergo an MRI on Sunday night.
The St. Louis Rams are concerned that the injury is "bad."
"I don't have any information on Sam right now," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "We've done X-rays, we'll do an MRI tonight after we land."
Bradford was injured when scrambling toward the sideline in the fourth quarter and landed awkwardly on the knee.
NFL Network's Mike Silver reports that the Rams have discussed signing Tim Tebow, but he does not believe he a deal will actually be reached.
