Jared Goff's Thumb 'Stiff' But Should Be Fine For 49ers Game

Dec 18, 2019 8:44 AM

Jared Goff says he'll be ready to play on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers despite a bruised right thumb that is ""a little stiff."

"I'll be good in a day or two," Goff said Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Rams (8-6) are in a must-win situation as they chase a Wild Card berth. The Rams must win on the road against the 49ers and at home versus the Arizona Cardinals plus the Vikings must lose at home to the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Goff injured his throwing-hand thumb late in the first half of last Sunday's 44-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys when his hand hit the helmet of left tackle Andrew Whitworth.

NFL Office Stepped In Amid Confusion Over Rams-Cowboys Coin Toss

Dec 16, 2019 7:47 AM

The NFL stepped in Sunday to reverse the team set for the second-half kickoff in Sunday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys, an unusual move that corrected a mistake made during the pregame coin toss.

After the Cowboys won the toss, Dak Prescott first told referee Walt Anderson that "we want to kick it," but then followed up with: "We defer to the second half."

Anderson replied, "You're going to kick," meaning the Cowboys had used their choice to kick off rather than to defer. The Cowboys kicked off to start the game and were set to kick off again to open the second half. At halftime, however, Anderson informed both teams that the NFL office in New York City had heard Prescott's request to "defer" and that it should be honored.

According to the NFL, the league office was authorized to step in under Rule 15, Section 3, Article 9 of its rule book. It states: "The replay official and designated members of the officiating department may consult with on-field officials, or conduct a replay review, of game administration issues, including: (a) penalty enforcement; (b) the proper down; (c) spot of a foul; and (d) the game clock."

Todd Gurley Miffed By Jared Goff's 'Vintage' Compliment

Dec 13, 2019 8:40 AM

Jared Goff intended to compliment Todd Gurley, but his running back wasn't pleased with his choice of words.

On a touchdown run in last week's win over the Seattle Seahawks, Gurley tangled with cornerback Tre Flowers and threw a stiff-arm that caught Goff's attention.

"He's a bad dude," Goff said. "It was vintage Todd."

Gurley took offense to the use of the word vintage.

"Sounds like I suck and then I made a good play," Gurley said straight-faced, with a shrug. "So, yeah, I guess so."

"Not my first time stiff-arming nobody," he added. "Just a regular stiff-arm."

Sean McVay On Using Todd Gurley More: 'Me Not Being An Idiot'

Dec 5, 2019 9:26 AM

The Los Angeles Rams have been using Todd Gurley more lately and Sean McVay says the change in offensive philosophy is simple.

"Me not being an idiot," McVay said.

The Rams are 7-5 as McVay has been hesitant to commit to the run until recently.

Gurley has rushed 44 times over L.A.'s last two games, totaling 192 yards and a touchdown. He had at least 100 scrimmage yards in two of his past three games.

"He's done a nice job handling a bigger workload," McVay said.
