May 2012 - Kansas City Chiefs Wiretap
Bowe To Receive Tag From Kansas City
The Chiefs plan to use the franchise tag on Dwayne Bowe if the two sides cannot reach a new deal, according to a league source.
The tag number for wide receivers this year is $9.5 million.
Bowe caught 81 passes for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns in 2011.
Chiefs Will Consider Signing Manning
Romeo Crennel says the Chiefs will consider signing Peyton Manning if the quarterback hits the free agent market.
Most team officials and coaches have been wary of discussing Manning for fear of violating the NFL's tampering rules.
However, Crennel wasn't shy.
When asked whether the Chiefs would pursue Manning, he said: "With a talent like that, I would be crazy not to consider it if he were available."
Report: Chiefs In The Hunt For Peyton
The Chiefs are emerging as a candidate to make a play for Peyton Manning if he is set free by the Colts, according to a report.
Bob Fescoe of Kansas City's 610-AM tweeted that he's heard the Chiefs and Manning's agent, Tom Condon, have spoken twice and that the financials appear to be a "good fit" for the team.
Manning missed the entire 2011 season while recovering from surgery on his neck and is due to receive a $28 million bonus on March 8.
Chiefs Agree To Deal With Stanford Routt
The Chiefs have reached an agreement on a contract with Stanford Routt.
The cornerback was released by the Raiders last week.
Routt will receive $6.5 million in guarantees and will make $11 million this season as part of a three-year deal, according to a source.
The Titans and Vikings were also pursuing the free agent.
Routt Will Be Picking His Next Team Soon
The Raiders released him a week ago, but Stanford Routt may be close to signing with a new team.
The cornerback visited the Bengals, Bills and Chiefs this past week and other teams are reported to have interest.
Chiefs May Have To Decide Between Bowe, Carr
The Chiefs have a pair of vital unrestricted free agents to deal with this offseason in Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.
Scott Pioli will likely have to decide to either franchise his top target on offense or a 25-year-old cornerback who has good size.
Kansas City may not re-sign both despite having as much salary cap space as any team in the NFL.
Chiefs Retain Jim Zorn As Quarterbacks Coach
Romeo Crennel announced the remainder of Kansas City's staff on Tuesday, which includes quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn, who was passed over for the offensive coordinator position.
Brian Daboll was hired recently to run the offense, which led many to question whether Zorn would be back.
Daboll Promises Chiefs Will 'Attack' On Offense
The Chiefs have employed five offensive coordinators in four years.
Brian Daboll, the newest hire, hopes to bring stability and an attacking attitude to Kansas City.
"You look at teams, for the most part percentage-wise that have been successful over the years, one word I think is sometimes overlooked is continuity," he said. "When you can have a system in play and you understand that your players are going to be in that system and they understand their roles, that gives you a little bit of a jump start."
The 36-year-old will replace the retired Bill Muir.
Daboll promised an aggressive approach.
"The first word I want to use is 'attack,'" he said. "When you're an offensive football coach, you want to try to really set precedent on the defense and attack the defense."
