The Chiefs have promoted Romeo Crennel to head coach, but he intends to remain serving as defensive coordinator as well.
The balance between the two jobs was a challenge Crennel faced at the end of the regular season, when he served as interim coach for the final three games.
"I'm not sure if he stated it publicly, but I get the sense Romeo wants to be the coordinator on defense," Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said on Sirius XM NFL Radio.
"I don't know if he's made the absolute final decision, but I'm pretty sure that's the way he wants to go."
Pioli said it would be up to Crennel to decide whether he wanted to bring in a defensive coordinator or hold on to the play-calling duties.

Chiefs Refusing To Pay Todd Haley
Todd Haley had one year left on his contract when he was fired by the Chiefs.
The team is reportedly refusing to pay him the remaining money left on his deal because he was canned "for cause."
Sources Expect Bears To Hire Phil Emery As GM
While the Bears are not yet ready to hire a new general manager and are setting up second interviews with more than one candidate, sources expect Phil Emery to ultimately be hired.
Emery is currently the director of college scouting for the Chiefs.
Jason Licht, director of pro scouting for the Patriots, is believed to be the other final candidate.
The Bears are searching for a replacement for Jerry Angelo.
Haley Accuses Chiefs Of Wiretapping, Tampering With His Cell Phone
Former Chiefs coach Todd Haley believes the team has many rooms at the team facility bugged so administrators can monitor conversations.
Haley also suspected that his personal cellphone had been tampered with.
The Chiefs have adamantly denied that they tap phones or listen in on conversations, but Haley wasn't the only one with suspicions.
"When you're mentally abused, you eventually lose it, too," one former longtime Chiefs executive said.
"The level of paranoia was probably the highest that I had ever seen it anywhere," another former high-ranking staffer said. "... If you make the wrong step, you might not be able to pay your mortgage."
This past year, Haley stopped talking on the phone and repeatedly checked his office for listening devices. After being fired, he has refused interview requests.
The Chiefs said there's nothing to substantiate Haley's fears, but some believed that anything was possible.
"I don't think that anything would surprise anyone, really," said a former employee who worked for the Chiefs for more than two decades. "That's how [general manager] Scott [Pioli] wants it."
Report Alleges Chiefs' Employees Victim Of Spying
A report from the Kansas City Star alleges that the Chiefs' front office has been run with the persistent belief that employees are being spied upon.
"The level of paranoia was probably the highest that I had ever seen it anywhere," a former high-ranking staffer told the newspaper. "... If you make the wrong step, you might not be able to pay your mortgage."
The change of culture began when Scott Pioli was hired as general manager in 2009.
Todd Haley stopped talking on his personal cell phone, believing it was bugged.
Certain floors and areas of the team facility were made unavailable for non-football employees.
The Chiefs denied any allegations of wiretapping or listening in on conversations.
Chiefs Name Crennel Head Coach
The Chiefs made Romeo Crennel the permanent head coach on Monday after he led the floundering team to a pair of wins late in the season.
Crennel had been the interim coach and the leading candidate to replace Todd Haley, who was fired last month. He was scheduled to be introduced at an afternoon news conference.
Source: Chiefs Plan To Retain Crennel
The Chiefs plan to retain interim head coach Romeo Crennel, according to sources.
Kansas City officials could not be reached for comment Saturday and a timeline for when they'll make an announcement was uncertain.
Jack Del Rio Interviews With Chiefs
The Chiefs have interviewed former Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio for their head coaching position.
Del Rio's name surfaced earlier in the week as someone the Chiefs might like to speak with.
Unlike Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who interviewed earlier in the week, Del Rio has a vast history as a head coach.
