Default language in Trent Richardson's contract permits the Indianapolis Colts to release him and void the remaining $3.184 million in guaranteed money for a wide range of reasons.
Richardson was suspended for the AFC Championship Game after missing a walkthrough and flight.
The suspension, which general manager Ryan Grigson said was handed down for "personal reasons," potentially could allow the Colts to void the final season of Richard's contract without paying him the $3.184 million in guaranteed money he was set to earn.
The reason for Richardson's absence, the report says, involves complications with his girlfriend's pregnancy that could have endangered his child's life.
Kelly Naqi of ESPN.com released a report that conflicts with the report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that transformed the question of deflated footballs from a curiosity into a national sensation.
Regarding the halftime inspection of the footballs at halftime of the Colts-Patriots game, Naqi writes: “One source said [NFL executive Mike] Kensil personally checked the PSI (pounds per square inch) levels of all 12 footballs the Patriots had for use on offense and found that 11 of those 12 were underinflated by ‘one to two pounds.'”
Reported Mortensen on January 20: “NFL has found that 11 of the Patriots footballs used in Sunday’s AFC title game were under-inflated by 2 lbs each, per league sources.”
Naqi’s report is more consistent with our report from January 25 regarding Mort’s contention that 11 balls were underinflated by two pounds: “As one league source has explained it to PFT, the football intercepted by Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson was roughly two pounds under the 12.5 PSI minimum. The other 10 balls that reportedly were two pounds under may have been, as the source explained it, closer to one pound below 12.5 PSI.”
Meanwhile, the new report from ESPN ignores the confusing Super Bowl Sunday item from NFL Media insisting that some of the balls were just “a few ticks under” the minimum.
LaRon Landry has been released by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts signed Landry to a four-year, $24 million contract in 2013 with the hope that he would be the hard-hitting safety they had been missing since Bob Sanders played for them.
Landry was suspended for four games for using performance-enhancing drugs last season. The Colts then placed him on the exempt/commissioner's permission list for a game after he returned from the suspension.
The Indianapolis Colts are unsure if they'll bring back Trent Richardson next season.
Richardson, whom the Colts acquired from Cleveland in September 2013, had weight issues during the season, was difficult to get in touch with and didn't tell the team he wouldn't be at the walk-through the day before the AFC Championship Game, a source said.
Richardson gained 15 pounds during the season, going up from 225 to 240 pounds.
Because of default language in his contract, the Colts could exercise an option to void $3.1 million in guaranteed money owed to Richardson next season. The NFL Players Association would likely challenge that ruling if it occurs.
D'Qwell Jackson was arrested on Tuesday for simple assault, Washington, D.C. police told Sports Illustrated. Jackson allegedly assaulted a pizza delivery employee over a parking space.
Jackson had 140 combined tackles and 4.0 sacks last season with the Indianapolis Colts.
Jackson could face 180 days in jail if he's convicted.
Troy Vincent has confirmed that Indianapolis Colts' general manager Ryan Grigson contacted NFL officials about the New England Patriots using underinflated balls.
Vincent, football operations chief of the NFL, conducted an interview with "60 Minutes Sports" that airs Tuesday on Showtime, as reported Monday by MMQB.SI.com, in which he said Grigson notified the league about a potential deflation problem.
Nobody in the Colts organization has confirmed those details, and Grigson was silent on the topic in the days leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl.
"Everything I'm sure is going to come out in the investigation, guys. Like I said, it's not appropriate for me to talk about. I can't do that," Grigson said Jan. 23 when asked whether he or anyone else in the Colts organization had notified the league about the Patriots using underinflated balls. "It's in the league's hands. I'm sorry."
