Lions Searching For Backup QB

Dec 2, 2014 3:09 AM

The Detroit Lions are searching for a new backup quarterback.

Shaun Hill will be a free agent, while Kellen Moore remains on the roster.

Matthew Stafford had injury issues during the first two seasons of his career, but has become remarkably durable.

"I haven't seen enough of (Moore) in actual games to say that you just roll with him and you feel great about it," GM Martin Mayhew said. "The idea of signing a veteran is appealing to us. However, he's done a lot of things in practice that makes you feel like he's very capable, so that's kind of an open situation right now."

Lions Hopeful New Ndamukong Suh Deal In Place By Mar. 11

Oct 8, 2014 9:29 AM

The Detroit Lions are optimistic that they will get an extension done with Ndamukong Suh before the start of free agency.

"I think this will get done on the eve of free agency or the eve of the start of the new league year, which is when free agency starts," general manager Martin Mayhew said. "Or some time shortly after the start of the new league year. That will be a good timetable for it.

"If it doesn't get done, we're fine with that. We can create some space and we have some room under the cap and the cap went up a little bit, as you guys probably heard. There's not going to be any type of setback or cap crunch or that type of thing if we don't get something done with him in the near future. But I do expect something to get done with him."

NFL free agency opens March 11.

Suh has a current cap number of $22.4 million entering the final year of his five-year contract.

Lions Release Nate Burleson, Louis Delmas

Oct 9, 2014 5:39 PM

The Detroit Lions have released Nate Burleson and Louis Delmas.

Burleson was scheduled to make $7,531,646 against the Lions' salary cap in 2014, but was willing to restructure his deal.

"I'm in a pretty good position because I've been in it long enough that I'm not surprised by what happens in the NFL, so this situation isn't foreign to me," Burleson told ESPN.com earlier this week. "Which means there's a certain comfort in knowing whatever happens is the best situation for both parties."

Burleson had 39 receptions for 461 yards and one touchdown in nine games in 2013.
