Schwartz Credits Leads For Stafford's Improved Interception Rate

Oct 12, 2014 2:05 AM

Matthew Stafford's interceptions are down this season, but Jim Schwartz isn't sure if has as much to do with improved decision-making as it does playing with a lead.

"A lot of Matthew's interceptions last year came late in games when we were down a bunch," Schwartz said. "We didn't do a good enough job of supporting him. You saw some of those interceptions and things like that. His interceptions last year, I think, were only up one over our 2011 playoff year. So I wouldn't necessarily credit or put that on the fact that he's improved his decision making. Since the time he has come into the league he has had great command over what we want to do offensively and also what defenses do. But I think any quarterback, if you're behind in games, there's going to be more opportunities for you to make mistakes and things like that because you're trying to catch up in the game."

Ndamukong Suh was fined $31,500 for a hit on Brandon Weeden that was not flagged by officials on the field and many in the media felt dubious.

"The fine amount is more than the minimum because he is a repeat offender and I wanted to get Ndamukong Suh's attention in this regard," VP of operations Merton Hanks said in an interview that aired on the NFL Network. "I've got to help him course-correct."

Suh has been fined $130,500 for two violations this season.

Ndamukong Suh Under 'Microscope', Fined Again

Oct 2, 2014 9:56 AM

Ndamukong Suh has been fined $31,500 for a hit on Brandon Weeden last Sunday.

On a video on NFLEvolution.com, one of the league's official websites, vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said he wanted to look into a hit by Suh on Weeden where he lowered his head into Weeden while making a hit.

Suh has now been fined seven times in his career.

"There's always going to be a microscope on me," Suh said. "I think there's been a microscope on me since I was first drafted in 2010 because I was a first-round pick. But I think there is always going to be a microscope on me no matter where it is, from outside media, from the NFL to little kids to anybody.

Lions Not Concerned About Nick Fairley's 'Old-School' Body

Nov 27, 2014 3:46 PM

Nick Fairley is listed at 298 pounds, but he weighed in at 306 pounds at the start of camp and could weigh even more than that right now.

"If I looked at him and didn't know him, I wouldn't think he played football. Thought he was a truck driver or something," C.J. Mosley said. "He's going to hate that."

Fairley began the season fast with 1.5 sacks and five tackles against the Minnesota Vikings, but a shoulder injury the following week has slowed him down.

"Nick's got a body that is old-school football," defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said. "There's a whole bunch of guys in the (practice facility) hallway with their pictures up there -- those guys all looked like that. There's nothing that's ever going to change with his body, but he's strong. There's no question about that.

"He's fast, and he just needs to get back into the groove. And I hope this is the week."

Barry Sanders: Hard For Me To Explain Decision To Retire

Jul 23, 2014 11:39 AM

Barry Sanders retired in the middle of his prime, a rare decision by a superstar athlete where they more frequently continue playing too long.

“I think I made the right decision," said Sanders. "It’s really hard for me to even explain it. But the way that’ll make sense for me to explain it to people who watched me play is … I was really very much an introspective guy … and for me, coming into the NFL with so much passion and drive for the game … and really enjoying those 10 years, and then, when that drive and determination and fire started to fade a little bit, and when it faded enough, I just knew it was time to go … After 10 years, the time was right, there was nothing else to stay for, and we were kind of rebuilding, and it was time to move on.”
