Lions Score 34 In The Fourth To Beat Bears

Oct 31, 2014 6:31 AM

The Lions scored an NFL-record 34 points in the fourth quarter as they overcame the Chicago Bears 37-27 Sunday. Jon Kitna threw two touchdown passes in the final quarter as the Lions broke the previous record by three points. Brian Griese, who had three interceptions as a starter in place of Rex Grossman, threw a 1-yard pass to Desmond Clark on a fourth down with 52 seconds left to pull the Bears within three. However, the onside kick bounced to Detroit's Casey FitzSimmons and he returned it for a TD to seal the victory.

Calvin Johnson Day-to-Day With Back Bruise

Sep 25, 2014 10:04 PM

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson walked gingerly through the Lions' locker room Monday, like an old man. A teammate teased him, and he smiled. Johnson, the second overall pick in this year's draft, suffered a lower back injury when he fell making an impressive, leaping catch in Sunday's 56-21 loss at Philadelphia. But it's just a bad bruise. Nothing's broken. "Just came down wrong, I guess," Johnson said. "I smacked the dirt pretty hard. I felt it right away." Marinelli said Johnson was probably day-to-day

Lions Place Campbell On IR

Jul 23, 2014 3:11 PM

The Detroit Lions have placed starting tight end Dan Campbell, who sustained an elbow injury in last Sunday's overtime victory against the Minnesota Vikings, on injured reserve, ending his 2007 season. A ninth-year veteran, Campbell is regarded as one of the best, albeit underrated, blocking tight ends in the league, and the Detroit running game will suffer far more than the passing attack in his absence. Second-year player Sean McHugh will take over as the starter. The Lions elevated Rudy Sylvan, a rookie from Ohio University, from the practice squad to the active roster to fill Campbell's spot.

Kitna Has Respect For McNabb, Eagles

Sep 25, 2014 10:10 PM

Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, who led the Lions to an overtime victory against the Vikings last week despite suffering a concussion in the first half, he expects Donovan McNabb to respond at the highest level. "This team (the Eagles) has always responded well to adversity," Kitna said. "It seems like the more adversity there is, the higher they respond. We know what type of place it is going to be. It is going to be a hornets' nest, and they are going to try to blow the drawers off."

Kevin Jones Desperate To Return For Lions

Oct 1, 2014 9:25 PM

The Lions offered guarded optimism Friday about the return of Kevin Jones, but several signs pointed to the hard-nosed, versatile running back making his season debut Sunday at Philadelphia. "I'm really optimistic. I'm excited," Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Friday. "I feel good about it. We'll wait and see. Each morning is a new adventure." A key concern for Jones' foot has been how much swelling occurs a day after practice. Marinelli said Jones was fine one day after a hard practice Thursday, when his formerly plain silver helmet was finally adorned with Lions decals. The team is scheduled to fly to Philadelphia today and Jones will wear a compression sock to limit any swelling incurred from the plane's pressurized cabin.

Peterson And Marinelli Share Admiration

Jul 7, 2014 2:56 AM

When Adrian Peterson visited Lions headquarters before the NFL draft, one thing stuck out. "The head coach, I felt like he was an awesome dude," Peterson said. "He was real cool. I really felt like I could have related to him a little bit as far as being a player's coach." Rod Marinelli thought Peterson was awesome, too. He loved the tape he had seen of the Fiesta Bowl -- Peterson sprinting downfield to make a tackle after an interception against Boise State. "The effort," Marinelli said. "To get up off the ground. That spoke volumes to me about the type of person he is and the type of player he is."

Kitna, Lions Spoil Oakland's Home Opener

Aug 10, 2014 10:20 AM

A 17-point lead quickly turned into a one-point deficit. The opposing crowd was roaring its approval. The kind of situation that would have doomed the Lions a year ago was easily overcome in the season opener. Jon Kitna backed up his big boasts by throwing a go-ahead, 32-yard touchdown pass to Shaun McDonald with 4:15 remaining, and Dewayne White caused two turnovers in the closing minutes to help the Lions spoil Lane Kiffin's coaching debut in Oakland with a 36-21 victory over the Raiders on Sunday.

The Lions unveiled their 53-man roster Saturday, but that doesn?t mean it?s set in stone. O?Sullivan and Dan Orlovsky ? have 17 NFL throws combined, and Jacksonville cut veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich. Asked if the Lions were interested at all in Leftwich, coach Rod Marinelli said: ?We?re going to look at all these guys right now.
