Chicago Could Sign QB Gutierrez

Oct 17, 2014 8:36 AM

The Bears could sign free-agent quarterback Matt Gutierrez on Wednesday. Given Chicago's issues at the position it's possible that Gutierrez could even play against the Raiders this weekend. "Believe it or not, we have given a little bit of thought to that matter," coach Lovie Smith said when asked how he would manage the position. Jay Cutler's backup, Caleb Hanie, injured his shoulder this past weekend.

Chargers' Rivera Concerned About Bears' Martz

Nov 13, 2014 4:51 AM

Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is concerned about the offense Mike Martz might be building in Chicago. San Diego and Chicago will play a preseason game on Saturday. "We went back and we watched Coach Martz's offense and things he had done in the past," Rivera said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "We looked at some [film] later on San Francisco stuff where they started to get explosive down the end of the 2008 season. "Really saw some things that were, I don't want to say scary, but it causes a little bit of concern because of how they attacked vertically." Rivera, who was the Bears defensive coordinator from 2004 to 2006, understands the danger of attacking the wide-open system. "If you're playing coverage, you got to be over the top of everybody because if the quarterback hits the guy running down the seam, it's going to be a big play," he said. "If you bring pressure, you got to make sure somebody is running with everybody else, or it's a big play. There is some concern because its an explosive offense."

Cutler Warns More Interceptions Are Coming

Nov 1, 2014 2:13 PM

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler cautioned that he'll throw interceptions this season, just hopefully not at the rate he did last year. Cutler tossed 26 picks in his first season with Chicago. A local newspaper has been charting his interceptions during training camp. "I'm going to throw some this year," he said Wednesday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I'm not going to lie about that." Cutler will enter the season under his third offensive coordinator in as many years (Mike Martz). "There are going to be some balls that are picked off," Cutler said. "It's part of the game. But we can't worry about it. Defenses will make adjustments, we have to make them back."

Knox Could Be Chicago's Top Target

Apr 29, 2014 8:23 AM

Just a week into training camp, wide receiver Johnny Knox appears to be the top target of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Knox has been targeted more than any of Chicago's other receivers. According to the Chicago Tribune's chart of 11-on-11 and seven-on-seven drills to this point, Knox has been targeted 55 times, 16 more than Devin Hester and Greg Olsen. "We're installing right now and depending on the coverages the ball will go different places," Martz said. "Everything we script is just plays going in so it depends on what the defense is doing. Because of our defense, some of what we're doing, the weak side is going to get kind of emphasized."
