Cutler Doesn't Expect To Rest Against Packers

Oct 15, 2014 6:35 PM

Jay Cutler doesn't expect to get much rest in Chicago's season finale against Green Bay on Sunday. "(Coach Lovie Smith) said prior to that game that we?re going to be playing, we're going to be going and we're going to be full go on Sunday," Cutler said. "So that's what we expect." Smith said the Bears "realize the importance of the game" and that they "want to go into the playoffs on a high," but wouldn't say how long he plans to stick with his top players. The Bears have a slim shot at the No. 1 seed in the NFC, but they'll need to win and get help in order to get it.

Bears Sign Mannelly, Toeaina To Extensions

Sep 3, 2014 10:57 AM

The Bears have signed long snapper Patrick Mannelly to a two-year, $2.29 million extension. They also rewarded defensive tackle Matt Toeaina, who would have been a restricted free agent, with a three-year extension worth about $6 million. "(My wife and I) have been here for 13 years," said Mannelly, who received a $550,000 signing bonus and will be among the league's highest-paid at his position. "The Bears have been good to me. I don't know if I ever even want to leave Chicago in the future. It would have been hard to go out there and test the market knowing how much I enjoy playing for the Bears."

Sep 12, 2014 7:32 PM

Mike Martz has had success as Chicago's offensive coordinator, but he hasn't ruled out being a head coach someone in the future. "Sure," he said. "If the opportunity were to come up again, who knows? Shoot, I'm 59 years old. I'm very happy with what I'm doing right now. And if that's it for me, I'd be the happiest guy in the world, too."

Cutler Won't Avoid Throwing Towards Revis

Oct 30, 2014 1:30 PM

Jay Cutler says he won't let the presence of Darrelle Revis take away an entire side of the field on Sunday when the Bears face the Jets. Revis has no interceptions this season, largely because teams have shied away from throwing the ball to his side. "No, you can't assume [the Bears will stay away from Revis' side]," Cutler said. "We've got good receivers. We trust the guys in our locker room. I tell those guys: 'You're gonna have to get open.' Whatever it takes, we're gonna have to find a way to complete balls [on Revis' side] because you can't eliminate one side of the field. It's too hard to do. It gives them too much of an advantage. So Johnny [Knox], and Devin [Hester], and all those guys, they're gonna have to find a way."

Jets Won't Kick To Devin Hester

Sep 12, 2014 7:39 PM

The Jets plan to avoid Bears return specialist Devin Hester at all costs on Sunday. "I think it's pretty safe to say we're planning on not kicking to him," New York coach Rex Ryan said. "I think you can write that down." Hester broke the NFL record for career return touchdowns by returning a punt 64 yards for a score against the Vikings on Monday night. "I don't think you can deal with him as a returner. It's ridiculous, he's got to go down as the best punt returner in the history of the game," Ryan said. "I have no idea [why the ball keeps going to him.] I hope the ball that we kick doesn't go to him."

Hester Sets NFL Return Record

Sep 12, 2014 7:39 PM

Devin Hester scored on a 64-yard punt return in the third quarter of Chicago's win over Minnesota on Monday night. The score gave Hester the NFL record for combined return touchdowns. He entered the game only one return touchdown away shy of Brian Mitchell's NFL record. "I hate sitting here taking all the glory," Hester said. "I wish them other 10 guys were up here and y'all were asking them questions because they deserve to be up here. I love them. Those other 10 guys, they wanted it badder than me. I wanted it bad. But I could tell they wanted it badder than me." Asked why he was getting so emotional talking about his teammates, Hester said: "Everything I'm thinking about, it's coming to me. Coming out of college, coaches told me I wasn't gonna be nothing but a kickoff and punt return dude. I wasn't gonna ever earn a position in the league. "But I'm here today to say that I am a kickoff and punt returner, but at the same time, the best to ever do it. I'm glad that they said that because right now, I can say today that Chicago Bears are the best punt return team that would ever do this. And we're not gonna stop on this one return. It's gonna be plenty more. It's gonna be a lot more than this. I guarantee you that."

The Vikings will host the Bears on Monday night at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium. The Metrodome's torn roof won't be repaired in time for the Week 15 battle. Damage from the weekend snowstorm that dumped more than 17 inches in Minneapolis and busted through the Metrodome's Teflon roof was worse than initially thought, according to the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission.
