Jay Cutler To Start Week 17 For Bears

Dec 22, 2014 4:31 PM

Jay Cutler will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears in Week 17 with Jimmy Clausen out with a concussion.

Clausen experienced delayed concussion symptoms on Sunday evening.

"Jay is our best option," Marc Trestman said.

Clausen was ruled out after an examination on Monday morning.

"Jay gives us the best chance this week. So that's why he'll be out there," Trestman said. "Jay said, 'I'll be ready to go.' He empathizes with what Jimmy had gone through last night. He's ready to go. He'll be in this afternoon to get started."

David Fales will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Week 17.

Trestman To 'Talk About' Starting Jimmy Clausen Again

Dec 22, 2014 1:19 PM

Marc Trestman was noncommittal about who will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears in Week 17.

Jimmy Clausen passed for two touchdowns and an interception in the Bears' loss to the Lions. Clausen had a passer rating of 77.0 while starting for Jay Cutler.

“We’ll talk about it today,” Trestman said Monday on WBBM Newsradio 780. “I thought he had a good performance. He needed some help, he didn’t get it; had a few drops along the way, had a couple of missed assignments up front in the running game that we could have had a little bit more yardage in the run game.”

Jay Cutler Wants To Remain With Bears

Dec 20, 2014 2:58 PM

Jay Cutler was as surprised as the general public by Marc Trestman's decision to bench him in favor of Jimmy Clausen.

"Shocked I think at first, I didn't see it coming," Cutler said Thursday of his initial reaction.

Cutler would like to remain with the Chicago Bears despite the sensitive end of the season.

"I would like to stay here," Cutler said. "I really like it here. I love the guys in the locker room. This is where I'd like to be."

The 31-year-old quarterback is in his sixth season in Chicago and signed a seven-year, $127 million contract in the offseason, with $54 million guaranteed.

Trestman's Benching Of Cutler Further Magnifies Distrust From Players

Dec 18, 2014 12:42 PM

A pair of accomplished and respected Chicago Bears players told ESPNChicago.com on Wednesday night that a portion of the locker room feels "confused and uncomfortable" over how Marc Trestman handled Jay Cutler's benching compared to the minor discipline offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer received last week.

On a performance level, neither player objected to Cutler losing his starting job to Jimmy Clausen for Week 16.

The general belief is the respective punishments for Cutler and Kromer are gravely inconsistent, after the Bears' offensive coordinator received "basically a slap on the wrist" for his very public indiscretions when he tearfully revealed in a team meeting on Dec. 8 that he was the anonymous source cited in a published NFL Media report highly critical of the quarterback.

This further magnifies the distrust between Trestman and the locker room, an on-going issue during much of the Bears' disappointing 5-9 season, according to the players.

Chris Conte Believes Playing In NFL Worth Risk Of Early Death

Dec 17, 2014 9:39 PM

Chris Conte, who has suffered two concussions this season, says playing in the NFL is worth the risk he takes to his long-term health by doing so.

Conte is a 25-year-old safety for the Chicago Bears.

"Ever since I was a little kid, it's what I've wanted to do," Conte told WBBM Newsradio in Chicago. "In college, I didn't even graduate school because my senior year, I honestly let school be a casualty to that because I knew I had one opportunity to make it to the NFL, and I put everything into that. And I felt school's something I could figure out later.

"As far as after football, who knows. My life will revolve around football to some point, but I'd rather have the experience of playing and, who knows, die 10, 15 years earlier than not be able to play in the NFL and live a long life. It's something I've wanted to do with my life and I wanted to accomplish. And I pretty much set my whole life up to accomplish that goal. So I don't really look toward my life after football because I'll figure things out when I get there and see how I am."

Conte has been unable to play in three games this season and couldn't finish seven of the 12 he's played in.

"As long as I outlive my parents, then we'll be all right," Conte said.
