Trent Edwards did more than deliver the Buffalo Bills a much-needed victory at a time when his demoralized and banged-up team needed it most.
The rookie third-round pick, making his first career start, took a big step in showing that he -- and not J.P. Losman -- might be the Bills' quarterback of the future.
Edwards is most definitely the quarterback of the present after a poised and efficient performance in a 17-14 win over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Patriots' Wilfork Fined $12,500 For Hit On Bills' Losman
Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork was fined $12,500 Thursday by the NFL for his low, late hit on Bills quarterback J.P. Losman.
Losman sprained his left knee during the play Sunday and is expected to miss at least two weeks. Wilfork was penalized on the play in the Patriots' 38-7 win.
Losman To Miss At Least Two Weeks, Bills Sign Nall
Down to just one healthy quarterback, and with injured starter J.P. Losman expected to miss at least two weeks with a sprained left knee, the Buffalo Bills on Monday re-signed veteran free agent Craig Nall, who the team had released at the end of the preseason.
Nall, 28, will serve as the backup to rookie Trent Edwards, who replaced Losman in the first quarter of Sunday's 38-7 loss to New England, and who will make his first regular-season start next Sunday when the Bills host the New York Jets.
Everett Sat Up, Lifted Right Arm Slightly Over Weekend
Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett continues to show improvement two weeks after a life-threatening injury to his spinal cord during a game.
Dr. Teodoro Castillo, his attending physician at Memorial Hermann Hospital, says Everett lifted his right arm slightly and sat up in bed for four hours over the weekend. That was by far the longest he's been able to sit up.
Castillo told ESPN's Darren Lyn that doctors are starting Everett out with about three hours a day of treatment, which includes elevating him or carrying him to a chair to put him in the sitting position, and working out his functioning muscles.
Everett even had a family member's baby put in his arms so he could cuddle with the child, even though he could not lift the baby.
Dr. Castillo is not putting a timetable on Everett's recovery. He says there is no way to predict when he will stand or walk again, although he is optimistic that might happen sooner than later.
Losman Replaced As Bills QB
Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman left Sunday's game against the Patriots after one series that ended when he fumbled as he was sacked.
Trent Edwards replaced him for Buffalo's second possession. Losman returned to the bench and warmed up while Edwards drove the offense to a touchdown and remained in the game.
Everett Heading Home To Houston To Begin Rehabilitation
Kevin Everett will be transferred to a hospital in Houston on Friday morning, where he will begin rehabilitation for a serious spinal cord injury he sustained during the Buffalo Bills? season opener almost two weeks ago.
Brian Overstreet, Everett?s agent, said Thursday that Everett, a third-year tight end, would travel by airplane to Houston, where he lives during the off-season, to begin rehabilitation.
Everett has continued to defy doctors? early predictions as he recovers from a collision Sept. 9 against the Denver Broncos that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Dr. Barth Green, a Miami-based neurosurgeon and spinal cord expert who has consulted on Everett?s case, said Thursday that he expected Everett to be released from the hospital in a matter of weeks.
Everett, 25, has been in intensive care since hours after his injury. He had surgery to repair direct compression to his spinal cord between the C3 and C4 vertebrae in his neck.
Everett Could Walk Within Weeks
Kevin Everett's doctor plans to have him stand up on his own soon, and believes the Bills tight end will be walking within weeks -- or sooner.
"Soon, in Buffalo or in Houston, they're going to stand him up," Dr. Barth Green told The Associated Press, shortly after discussing Everett's condition with Bills orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Cappuccino. "They're very confident he'll be walking very soon & in the next days or weeks, not months."
O.J. Charged With Seven Felonies, Could Face Life
O.J. Simpson was charged Tuesday with seven felonies, including kidnapping, in the alleged armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors in a casino-hotel room.
Simpson was arrested Sunday on suspicion of assault and robbery with a deadly weapon. Clark County District Attorney David Roger filed those charges and added kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, according to court documents.
Simpson, who faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted, was charged along with three other men authorities believe barged into a room at the Palace Station casino and stole sports memorabilia from two collectors.

Prosecutors were preparing to charge Simpson with two counts of robbery with use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and coercion, according to Clark County District Attorney David Roger.
Everett Moves Some Fingers
The Buffalo Bills? players might have a little more spring in their steps today in Pittsburgh due to more upbeat news about their fallen teammate, tight end Kevin Everett.
Everett had slight movement in the fingers on his right hand, a Bills source confirmed. Renowned physician Dr. Barth Green reported the latest progress from Miami after speaking with Everett?s doctors in Buffalo. Green is chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Green, who has served as a consultant to Everett?s medical team, was the doctor who earlier this week predicted Everett would walk again.
The Buffalo Bills would not confirm the progress on Friday or Saturday.
