Falcons May Not Play 2017 Preseason Games In New Stadium

Jun 27, 2016 7:05 AM

The Atlanta Falcons haven't ruled out playing their 2017 preseason home games at a stadium other than their new home.

It was reported last week that $200 million in change orders were placed for the Falcons' new stadium.

"We would have options," CEO Rich McKay said. "You've obviously got the University of Georgia. You've got Georgia Tech. But I wouldn't say that we view this as ... it's not even a consideration of something we've looked into. We're very confident in June 1, so we don't view it as a problem. But we have alternatives."

The Falcons won't play those games at the Georgia Dome.

"It will not be an option," McKay said. "It will be on its way down."

The Falcons could also play at their preseason games on the road.

$200M In Changes Ordered For New Falcons Stadium

Jun 24, 2016 8:57 AM

The Atlanta Falcons have confirmed that $200 million in changes have been ordered for the new $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but they are confident it won't affect the target opening date of June 1, 2017.

"When you look at the change orders -- $200 million in change orders -- it's principally in steel from the complexity of design,'' CEO Rich McKay said. "That's where that [cost] is. We knew that was coming. We've seen it coming. When we decided to do the one-stadium solution and do a downtown solution on a complex site ... this site was complex.

"As you know, it's 50 feet higher up from the [nearby convention center, the World] Congress Center is to where we are here. So, there's a lot of complexity. We knew that was going to increase cost. We also knew when we put a roof on, it's going to increase cost.

"Those overruns were principally driven by the complexity of design, the amount of steel involved, the numbers of cranes involved to make sure that we get the stadium up on time. All those things went into that.''

There were previous delays in the construction process that moved the target date from March 2017 to June 2017, as first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Roddy White Will Sign With Contender Or Retire

Jun 10, 2016 8:47 AM

Roddy White says he would be content in retirement if he isn't able to sign with a contender.

The Atlanta Falcons released White in March.

"I'm considering playing for a winner, but if I'm not I'm fine just where I'm at right now," the wide receiver said.

White told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he has had chances to sign with other teams since his release but only wants to join a team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl, saying "maybe six teams" meet that criteria.

Julio Jones: Falcons Need To Communicate Better On Offense

Jun 8, 2016 12:22 PM

Julio Jones brought up the need for the Atlanta Falcons to communicate better on offense in a meeting with coordinator Kyle Shanahan this offseason.

"Kyle sat us down, one by one, and then talked to us as a whole, but his biggest thing is communication," Jones said. "We were everywhere (last season). Our job is to make sure we're on the same page with the quarterbacks, because Kyle, he's coaching the quarterbacks. He's coaching all of us, but if he's telling the quarterbacks one thing and our receivers coach is telling us another thing, we're going to kind of be off.

"We're going out here and we're executing properly and we're executing the right things. But if the quarterback's off and we're off ... we've got to go out there and make it come to life. That's what we just have to do a better job of. We just had another little meeting here after practice. Quarterbacks, receivers, everybody, we've just got to do a better job of communicating."

Despite some disappointment on offense, Jones caught 136 receptions for 1,871 yards and eight touchdowns last season.
