Niners Lead League With Seven Compensatory Picks

Mar 10, 2023 8:52 AM

The NFL has announced the compensatory picks for the 2023 NFL draft, with the San Francisco 49ers leading with way with seven selections.

The league issued 37 compensatory picks.

San Francisco's picks came following the departures of head coaches Robert Saleh (New York Jets), Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins) and DeMeco Ryans (Houston Texans), as well as general managers Martin Mayhew (Washington Commanders) and Ran Carthon (Tennessee Titans) in recent years.

Sixteen teams received compensatory picks.

The Niners and Los Angeles Rams picked up the maximum allowable four additional picks under the compensatory free agent formula.

Texans Lose Draft Pick For Salary Cap Violation

Mar 10, 2023 8:49 AM

The Houston Texans will forfeit their fifth-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft and have been fined $175,000 for a salary cap reporting violation involving Deshaun Watson.

After a review, the league determined that the Texans provided Watson compensation in the form of a membership at an alternative athletic facility in 2020, early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Texans said they "absorbed $26,777 in costs for player benefits for the use of alternate athletic facilities." The team said it understands that amount "should have been charged instead to player salaries."

According to the collective bargaining agreement, teams must report any player compensation or benefit. The Texans believe the payment didn't provide any salary cap advantage and viewed it as an accounting error.

Florida's QB Anthony Richardson Sets NFL Combine Records

Mar 5, 2023 1:13 AM

Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson said he has referred to himself as "Cam Jackson" because he liked Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson so much.

During the quarterback workouts at the NFL's scouting combine on Saturday, Richardson looked every bit as physically imposing as Newton and ran almost like Jackson.

At 6-foot-4, 244 pounds, Richardson set combine records for a quarterback with a vertical jump of 40.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches. Richardson, in his only attempt, then uncorked an official clocking of 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard dash in Lucas Oil Field.

Jalen Carter Charged With Reckless Driving, Racing In Fatal Crash

Mar 1, 2023 4:29 PM

Jalen Carter has been charged with reckless driving and racing in connection with a crash that killed a teammate and a recruiting staff member.

An arrest warrant, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, alleges Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against the 2021 Ford Expedition driven by the recruiting staffer, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy, which led to the Jan. 15 wreck.

Devin Willock, who was an offensive lineman for the Bulldogs, and LeCroy were killed in what police initially reported as a single-vehicle accident.

Reckless driving and racing are both misdemeanors in Georgia.

The SUV driven by LeCroy was traveling about 104 mph shortly before the crash.

According to documents and recordings of 911 calls reviewed by the Journal-Constitution, at least two vehicles driven by Georgia football players had been at the scene, including the Jeep driven by Carter, who left the scene before police or emergency personnel arrived.

Carter returned to the scene less than two hours later, according to the paper, which reported that he was asked by police whether he had been racing the vehicle that crashed.

Carter is the No. 1 prospect in the draft, according to ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.

Seahawks Will Consider Drafting QB Amid Talks With Geno Smith

Mar 1, 2023 8:29 AM

The Seattle Seahawks are working to re-sign Geno Smith, but that won't stop them from considering a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in this year's draft.

John Schneider described contract talks with Smith as "positive" thus far.

"We are totally connected to the quarterbacks that are coming out," Pete Carroll said. "This is a really huge opportunity for us. It's a rare opportunity. We've been drafting in the low 20s for such a long time; you just don't get the chance with these guys. So we're deeply involved with all that."

The Seahawks haven't picked in the top five since they drafted linebacker Aaron Curry with the No. 4 selection in 2009.

"A lot," Schneider said when asked how much the Seahawks are looking at this year's quarterback class. "Every year, honestly, we really look at it a lot. Like I said earlier, we haven't picked fifth overall since we've been here. So yeah, I got out to see a lot of quarterbacks this year. It was pretty fun. But honestly, every year we've tried to do that, and we've tried to add quarterbacks."
