Indiana has fired football coach Tom Allen, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday, a day after the Hoosiers completed their third consecutive losing season.

Allen, who had led Indiana since 2017 after spending a season as the team's defensive coordinator, finished 33-49 as Hoosiers coach. Indiana dropped its final three games, including Saturday's rivalry contest at Purdue, to finish 3-9. It had gone 9-26 overall and 3-23 in Big Ten play since the 2020 season.

With Jim Harbaugh nowhere in sight and a scandal hanging over their heads, J.J. McCarthy and No. 3 Michigan stared down No. 2 Ohio State and ran the school's win streak against the Buckeyes to three games with a 30-24 victory on Saturday in maybe the most consequential game in the history of the storied rivalry.

Michigan State hired Oregon State football coach Jonathan Smith for the same role Saturday, hours after both teams ended their regular seasons.

Smith, 44, completed the regular season Friday night as No. 16 Oregon State fell to rival Oregon 31-7 on the road, dropping to 8-4 on the season. A source tells ESPN that Smith met with the Beavers' team late Saturday morning to inform them of his decision to leave for Michigan State.

"As I start this next chapter of my coaching career, I want to first thank all the players, coaches and colleagues I have worked with the last six years," Smith said in a statement Saturday.

Jim Harbaugh will be prohibited from being on the sideline for the remainder of the regular season as a result of the Big Ten's investigation into in-person scouting and sign stealing.

Harbaugh will be allowed to coach during the week.

Michigan is currently ranked No. 2 in the AP pool and is undefeated.
