Chris Harris: Broncos' Defense To Be Even More Reliant On CBs In 2015

Apr 20, 2015 7:21 PM

Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib formed one of the NFL's best cornerback tandems last season with the Denver Broncos.

Harris expects the Broncos' defense to be even more reliant on them this season.

"(The defense) is going to rely a lot more on me and Talib to make a lot of plays," Harris said Monday on the first day of voluntary workouts, according to the team website. "We're going to be out there on an island a lot. It's a lot of responsibility on us to be able to shut our guys down."

"Everybody else is going to be a lot more aggressive," he added. "I'm pretty much going to be on an island, I've just got to cover my man a lot in this defense."

Titans Believe Mettenberger Could Become Poor Man's Brady

Apr 14, 2015 11:15 AM

The Tennessee Titans view Zach Mettenberger as the steal of the 2014 NFL Draft and that he can become a poor man's Tom Brady.

Mettenberger was uneven in his six starts as a rookie, completing 59.8 percent of his throws with eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and an 83.4 passer rating.

The Titans own the No. 2 overall pick in the draft and may believe in Mettenberger enough to pass on a quarterback.

Raiders Expected To Have Substantial Cap Space Again In 2016

Apr 10, 2015 3:34 PM

The Oakland Raiders lead the NFL in available cap space with more than $20 million.

While it is impossible to pinpoint exactly how much salary-cap room the Raiders will end up having, it should be around $70 million or so. The Raiders had cap room in the high-$60 million range in 2014 and this year.

The Raiders have a few young players they can extend, such ss Sio Moore, Mychal Rivera, D.J. Hayden, Menelik Watson and Latavius Murray.

Oakland pursued several prominent free agents this offseason such as Ndamukong Suh and Randall Cobb.

Mike Mayock Moves Mariota Ahead Of Winston On Draft Board

Apr 10, 2015 3:05 PM

Mike Mayock has moved Marcus Mariota ahead of Jameis Winston on his draft board.

Winston has been widely considered the top prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft.

"I've been fighting with this thing all along," said Mayock. "There have been two issues for me with Winston. Number one is on the field. He threw 18 interceptions this year. On a team that arguably had the best talent in the country, he continued to put his team at a disadvantage almost weekly," Mayock said on NFL Network's "Path to the Draft" Wednesday. " ... Off the field, regardless of what did or didn't happen in that alleged rape, he continued a pattern of poor decisions throughout his career. The bottom line for me is, can you trust him off the field?

"As far as Mariota is concerned, the more tape that I've watched, the more I've appreciated what he's been asked to do in their version of the spread offense. He reads combination routes, takes tremendous care of the football, and he wins games. He's not a natural thrower, but in the correct scheme, I think he can be productive. I've been fighting this for a long time, and I think that's what I've come down on."

LeSean McCoy Believes Chip Kelly Doesn't Like Or Respect Stars

Apr 7, 2015 8:27 PM

LeSean McCoy and Chip Kelly still haven't spoken since the Philadelphia Eagles' dealt the running back to the Buffalo Bills.

McCoy said he heard Kelly say to reporters that money was the primary factor. He said he heard Jeffrey Lurie say that Kelly thought his shifty running style wasn't ideally suited to his offense.

McCoy has his own theory.

"I don't think he likes or respects the stars. I'm being honest," McCoy said on Monday. "I think he likes the fact that it's 'Chip Kelly and the Eagles.' "

Kelly has traded away McCoy and Nick Foles, let Jeremy Maclin leave in free agency and released DeSean Jackson.

"It was 'DeSean Jackson - a high-flying, take-off-the-top-of-the-defense receiver.' Or 'The quick, elusive LeSean McCoy,' " McCoy said. "I don't think [Kelly] likes that."

McCoy said he has no animosity toward Kelly and that he intends to call his former coach soon.

"Now you got DeMarco (Marco). I think he's a good player," McCoy said. "But then you got [quarterback Sam] Bradford. He's in and out banged up. The main wide receiver is [Riley] Cooper. The tight end is [Brent] Celek. . . . [Kelly] likes it like that. The tension - the this or that. He doesn't like that. He don't like the way you dress.

"He's not the bad dude everybody makes him out to be. He's just different. But I don't really have any hate for him. I really don't. In the beginning I did, but I don't. If I see him I'll speak to him, respectfully - 'How are you doing, coach? Good luck.'"

Geno Smith Working With QB Guru For Brady, Brees

Apr 6, 2015 5:11 PM

Geno Smith is working out with Tom House this offseason.

House is a former major league pitcher and pitching coach who has become a quarterback guru for the likes of Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Smith, speaking to reporters Monday on a conference call, said he was joined at the workouts by teammates Quincy Enunwa and Shaq Evans.

"I worked extremely hard to improve my mechanics and some of the things I felt I needed to improve on from last year, that I could work on without being in the team structure," Smith said.

Cowboys Confident In Ability To Maximize Darren McFadden

Apr 6, 2015 1:30 PM

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the NFL's best offensive lines and they're confident they can maximize the talent of Darren McFadden.

McFadden averaged less than 3.4 yards per carry for the Oakland Raiders over the past three seasons.

“We liked him a lot coming out of college,’’ Jason Garrett said. “He came out in ’08. That was the same year we drafted Felix Jones. We spent a lot of time with him and on him. I think he was the fourth player taken in that draft. There was a lot to like about him.

“We are confident in the environment we can create for our guys to bring the best out in him.’’

McFadden played in 16 games for the first time in his career last season. He missed 19 games over the previous three seasons and has played in more than 13 games in a season only once in his career.

“He is a big explosive back,’’ Garrett said. “He is quick. He is fast. He is physical. He can run inside. He can hit the home run.  He can catch the ball. He can protect.

“Now injuries have been an issue for him. We don’t think significant injuries, more the soft tissue type injuries. Hopefully we can create the right environment for him to be healthy and take advantage of those opportunities.’’

Jordan Matthews Doesn't Think Eagles Need Classic No. 1 Receiver

Apr 3, 2015 1:05 PM

Jordan Matthews doesn't believe the Philadelphia Eagles need a No. 1 wide receiver following the departure of Jeremy Maclin this offseason.

"People ask me about being the No. 1 wide receiver; Forget it," Matthews said in a telephone interview Thursday. "I want us to be a receiving corps. That's what I want it to be."

Matthews spoke with teammates Riley Cooper and Josh Huff about the issue this offseason.

Matthews was the Eagles' second-leading receiver with 67 catches for 872 yards and eight touchdowns. He played only 65 percent of the downs, staying as the team's slot receiver.

"I think you would think that I might get a whole lot more outside reps now just because Maclin is gone, but I already had talked to coaches, and they were already going to implement me more on the outside as opposed to just the inside regardless," Matthews said. "I don't think that's a crazy, huge deal."

Chip Kelly said last week that he can envision Matthews playing "a lot of different spots."

"I don't think one 'No. 1 wide receiver' was in the Super Bowl this year, but they're two Super Bowl-winning teams that have receiving corps that work their butts off, that block in the run game, that catch the ball when they have to," Matthews said. "Whatever public perception about what they think we should look like or what they think we need, if we go out there and put a product on the field that wins games, then we can change all perceptions."

Raiders Learned From Using Cap Space On Declining Players In 2014

Apr 1, 2015 8:09 PM

The Oakland Raiders used the majority of their $60 million-plus salary cap room on older, declining players last offseason. The Raiders changed their approach in the 2015 offseason.

Oakland has signed 11 players in 2015, none of whom are over the age of 28. Last year’s moves were clearly a mistake and the Raiders have cut three players they added last year: defensive end LaMarr Woodley, quarterback Matt Schaub (acquired in a trade) and defensive lineman Antonio Smith. A fourth, running back Maurice Jones-Drew, retired. He would have likely been released if he hadn't retired. Two others, cornerbacks Tarell Brown and Carlos Rogers, are free agents the team currently has no interest in bringing back.
