Calvin Johnson Pushed By Receivers Coach

Sep 9, 2014 6:49 AM

Calvin Johnson has been pushed toward greatness by receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.

"You tell me you want it. Show me," Jefferson said. "That's my whole thing with him. When I first realized we could get this record, I asked if he wanted it. He said yes. I said here's how you get it. You got to eat it; you got to live it; you got to talk it; you got to breathe it. Every conversation you have that is not about breaking that record means you're not going to get it. Every meal you have, if you don't think that's a football going into your mouth when you pick up your food, you're not going to get it. Every breath you take, if you ain't inhaling and exhaling that record, you ain't going to get it.

"Last game (against Arizona), when I saw them do what they do, and saw him do what he did (10 receptions for 121 yards), he wants it. He's going after it. I told him if they take 11 guys and put them on you, and Matthew (Stafford) throws you the ball, get it if you want it. There's a way That's the way I was raised in this league by (Bill) Parcells. I try to instill those same values in him."

Bradford Might Benefit From Up-Tempo System

Oct 6, 2014 2:50 PM

Sam Bradford has played well in up-tempo situations this season, begging the question of whether the St. Louis Rams should purposely play that way and not just when trailing.

Bradford’s fourth-quarter passer rating (94.4) and 2-minute passer rating (88.8) are better than his overall passer rating (83.3) this season.

Bradford ranks 21st in overall passer rating but is 13th in fourth-quarter rating.

Lions Struggling To Find Secondary Receiver

Sep 22, 2014 12:23 PM

The Detroit Lions have struggled to find a secondary receiver to complement Calvin Johnson.

Kris Durham, Mike Thomas and Brian Robiskie have combined for 93 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown this season.

"Not disappointed," Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "I just think that we've got to do better in that situation. Obviously, the challenge is there because we've got new guys that have not done that, but that's the reality we're in. I think the guys have got to respond this week. We're going to see very similar-type looks. I would expect a very similar-type game plan that we got last week (against Arizona).

"You know, all we need is to have one play from every guy that we didn't have last week. You know, Calvin's going to have his, but every guy has to have a play that's made. Stefan (Logan) made a play last week that kept the drive alive and made a big-time third-down conversion. You know, Kevin (Smith) came in on a third down and hit a big screen. If we can get a big play from each group that is now playing, that'll keep our drives alive and allow us to move the ball and score points."

Aaron Rodgers Endorses Alex Smith To Start Somewhere In 2013

May 28, 2014 6:12 AM

Aaron Rodgers believes Alex Smith has played well enough to be an NFL starter again next season.

Smith and Rodgers were each members of the 2005 NFL Draft.

“He comes in, he’s (got a) 70 percent completion (percentage), he’s (got a) 100-plus quarterback rating," said Rodgers. "Last year, he’s like barely over one percent interception percentage,” Rodgers said. “He’s a great quarterback, he just needs to go somewhere he gets appreciated for the skills he has and hopefully he gets a chance next year.”

Vernon Davis Still Doesn't Have Chemistry With Kaepernick

Sep 7, 2014 10:51 PM

Vernon Davis and Colin Kaepernick are still working on developing their chemistry.

Davis caught six balls for 83 yards and a touchdown in Kaepernick's first start, but Davis has received far fewer targets since.

“You have to develop that chemistry, that bond so you can be on the same page,” Davis said. “That’s something me and Kap don’t have right now. We don’t have it. You have to expect it because he just stepped in. Me and Alex, we’ve been here.

“It took some time for me and Alex to get like that. In the beginning, Alex would overthrow me, he would underthrow me. We had to build that chemistry that he could trust that I’m going in that spot that I needed to be. That’s something that me and Kap don’t have right now, but we’re working on it.”

Davis believes Kaepernick is adjusting to his speed.

“Just working on some of the deep throws, like the ones you saw in the game, we work on it,” Davis said. “Because in practice, he would overthrow me. I think he’s just kind of scared of my speed a little bit. He doesn’t really know it. We don’t have that timing, but it will come, just like any quarterback and wide receiver. It takes time.”

49ers' Success Against Brady Came When Taking Away Quick Pass

Dec 15, 2014 2:01 AM

The San Francisco 49ers blitzed Tom Brady on just 12 of his 69 drop-backs on Sunday.

The 49ers intercepted Brady twice with both coming when they didn't pressure him.

The Patriots kept the pass rush at bay with quick throws, but Brady's QB rating was 26.2 when forced to hold onto the ball for more than 2.5 seconds.

Raiders Display Allen's Vision For Future

Oct 11, 2014 3:18 PM

The Oakland Raiders' 15-0 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs was the first time Dennis Allen's vision for the team was successfully on display. Allen wants the Raiders to be built around a strong running game and defense.

"It's just like I've been saying since Day 1 - we've got to be more consistent at it," Allen said Monday at his weekly news conference. "We've proven we can do it at times, but we've got to be more consistent at it. That will be our challenge moving forward."
