Dolphins, Jaylen Waddle Agree To $84.75M Extension

May 30, 2024 10:31 AM

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to a three-year, $84.75 million contract extension with Jaylen Waddle, according to sources.

The wide receiver will receive $76 million in guaranteed money.

Waddle's new deal, which runs through the 2028 season, makes him one of the NFL's top five highest-paid wide receivers.

The guaranteed money ranks behind only A.J. Brown ($84 million) and Amon-Ra St. Brown ($77 million).

Waddle, 25, set a Dolphins franchise record with his third consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season in 2023.

Report: Vikings Considered Trading Justin Jefferson On Draft Night

May 30, 2024 10:38 AM

The Minnesota Vikings considered trading Justin Jefferson on draft night, according to a new report.

Jefferson is awaiting a new contract from the Vikings, which has led to trade rumors.

"There was buzz at draft time that the Vikings wanted to move from No. 11 to No. 5, not to pick a quarterback but to get LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was picked No. 6 by the [New York] Giants," Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press wrote. "Had that trade occurred, Jefferson would have been traded and Nabers would have been the No. 1 receiver."

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said at the NFL Scouting Combine that the idea of trading Jefferson had never crossed his mind, while head coach Kevin O'Connell backed him up, saying they had no intention of trading Jefferson.

Justin Fields Laughs Off Kick Return Idea: 'Not Here To Do That'

May 30, 2024 10:34 AM

Justin Fields isn't buying into the idea that he could return kicks for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 2021 first-round draft pick, who joined the Steelers via trade from the Chicago Bears in March, addressed the anecdote from teammate Jaylen Warren that special teams coach Danny Smith said Fields could be an option to return kicks.

"I think everybody kind of interpreted it wrong," the quarterback said. "Coach Danny was basically just trying to send a message that no matter who you are, you could be on special teams. He just used that as an example.

"... It's funny how serious social media takes everything. It was kind of funny to me when everybody was making a big deal about it for no reason."

Warren floated the idea in a podcast interview with teammate Cameron Heyward, and it exploded on social media.

"As soon as you touch the ball, that's when everything starts to happen," Warren said. "Our special teams coordinator was talking about Justin Fields being back there. ... We looked at him like, Justin Fields will be back there? I think it's cool."

The Baltimore Ravens have officially moved Malik Cunningham to wide receiver.

NFLPA Proposing Total Overhaul Of Offseason Programs

May 29, 2024 9:49 AM

The NFL Players Association is proposing a complete overhaul of the league's offseason programs.

According to a report, the NFLPA wants to see the changes in place as soon as 2025.

They want to see an elimination of voluntary spring workouts and organized team activities "in favor of a longer training camp ramp-up, with players reporting in mid-June to early July."

Currently, all teams are permitted to begin workout programs in April, ahead of the annual draft, and host a rookie minicamp in May. Voluntary OTAs then follow, with many teams hosting mandatory minicamp in June.

Training camps, which lead directly into the preseason, generally don't require veterans to report until late July.

Bills GM On Stefon Diggs Trade: We Had To Clear 'Albatross' Contract

May 29, 2024 9:44 AM

The Buffalo Bills ate more than $31 million in salary when they traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans earlier this offseason.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane was asked why the team didn't wait until after June 1 to deal Diggs, which would've allowed them to spread the financial impact over multiple seasons.

"I mean, listen, there's a lot of things I think you weigh," Beane told The Athletic Football Show. "A player of his caliber, you weigh a lot of things. But ultimately, we just talked about the (salary) cap. ... I don't need to go through all the reasons why we decided to go ahead and do that. I would say, from a cap standpoint, we decided just to go ahead and eat it out now. We think we can compete and do what we need to do by eating it now. Because if we didn't, if we tried to come up with some way to split it up too many different ways, it's just like that albatross hanging on your neck all year. ... What's '25 look like? What's '26?"

The trade also robbed the Bills of about $4 million of cap space this season, but they offloaded the remainder of the four-year, $96 million contract extension Diggs signed in 2022.

Buffalo freed up a projected $19 million in 2025.

Bengals Start OTAs Without Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase

May 29, 2024 9:41 AM

The Cincinnati Bengals are downplaying the absence of wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase as the team begins OTAs.

Higgins has yet to sign the franchise tag the Bengals placed on him in February.

Chase has yet to participate in the team's offseason program as well. He is eligible for a new contract after reaching the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons.

"[They] are still working hard elsewhere, and they'll be back at the right times," Zac Taylor said. "And the beauty is we know those guys, we know what they're about and that they'll be ready and focused when it's time to come back."

Stetson Bennett's Time Away From Rams Was For Mental Health

May 29, 2024 9:36 AM

Stetson Bennett confirmed Tuesday that his time away from the Los Angeles Rams last season was used to address his mental health.

Bennett said he wanted to keep the reason for his absence "in-house," but when asked if it be "accurate to say that it fell under the umbrella of mental health," Bennett said, "Yeah, I'd say that."

The Rams placed Bennett on the reserve/non-football illness list last September.

The quarterback was a fourth-round pick in 2023 out of Georgia.

"Thank goodness that [general manager] Les [Snead] and Coach [Sean] McVay and everybody involved allowed me to do that," Bennett said.

Bennett said he was "nervous the first day" he was back during the team's offseason program, but that it has "gotten better each day." When asked if he expected to be back with the Rams this season, he said "Yeah."
