Carson Wentz Placed On Reserve/COVID-19 List

Aug 30, 2021 3:11 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have placed Carson Wentz, Ryan Kelly and Zach Pascal on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The fact that Wentz is being placed on the COVID-19 list is an indication he is not vaccinated.

When asked during training camp if he was vaccinated, Wentz said, "That's a personal decision."

The Colts have had one of the lowest percentage of vaccinated players in the NFL. It's something that irked owner Jim Irsay before the start of training camp.

"You get vaccinated. It's the best choice," Irsay said last month. "All choices have risks, there's no question, and you respect the personal choice that people have out there for their health, but it just makes the most sense. I don't think -- you could take this topic to Harvard and Yale debate club and whoever got the side of arguing that vaccination is the most intelligent and logical thing to do at this point. I don't think you could argue against that. There is always risk in everything in life, but getting vaccinated is the right thing to do."

Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly Set To Return To Practice

Aug 22, 2021 11:39 PM

Frank Reich says the Indianapolis Colts will welcome Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly back to practice on a limited basis this week.

Wentz has been out since injuring his left foot on the second day of training camp on July 29. Nelson has been out since Aug. 2 after injuring his right foot. Kelly has been out with a left elbow injury since July 30.

The team gave a five- to 12-week time frame on Wentz's and Nelson's recoveries. If both return this week, it will be just three weeks removed from their respective surgeries.

Colts Don't Want To Rush Carson Wentz Back

Aug 16, 2021 9:06 AM

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said Thursday he told Carson Wentz that he does not want him to return to the lineup until he's 100% healthy from his left foot surgery.

"I know he's such a competitor and wants to be there for his team," Irsay said. "But he has to help by only coming back when he's ready because we want to see him healthy for two months and two years and four years and do those things that you see the great players at the Hall of Fame (do). They're there because they can stay on the field and Carson does everything he can to stay on the field."

Wentz injured his left foot when he planted to throw during the second day of training camp on July 29. He originally suffered the injury in high school, but never had an issue with it before July 29. Wentz had surgery on Aug. 2.

The Colts provided a timetable for return of 5-12 weeks for the quarterback.

Colts Optimistic Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson Could Play Week 1

Aug 11, 2021 5:20 PM

Carson Wentz and Quenton Nelson are tending to be healthy enough to play in Week 1 after they each underwent a foot surgery.

The Indianapolis Colts announced they could need between five and 12 weeks to recover.

Wentz, who had surgery Aug. 2, will start his rehab next week but was at the Colts' training camp practice Tuesday without a walking boot and without limping.

With Wentz out, sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger has split the first-team practice snaps with Jacob Eason and will continue to do so in Thursday and Friday's joint practices with the Carolina Panthers.

Colts Extend Frank Reich, Chris Ballard Through 2026

Aug 11, 2021 2:02 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have extended the contracts of Frank Reich and Chris Ballard through the 2026 season.

Ballard's new deal has been complete since June, while Reich finalized his deal last week, according to a source.

"We have as great a general manager - head coach combination as there is in the NFL, and I can't tell you how proud I am to have them leading our franchise," Jim Irsay said in a statement. "I truly believe this football team is on the doorstep of great things, and that's because of the culture both have cultivated in their time with the Horseshoe."

The Colts are 32-32 and have made the playoffs in two of four seasons under Ballard. Reich is 28-20 in three seasons with the Colts.

Sam Ehlinger Closes Gap On Jacob Eason To Be Colts' Week 1 Starter

Aug 10, 2021 8:54 PM

Sam Ehlinger has closed the gap against Jacob Eason to be the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts if Carson Wentz is not ready for the start of the regular season.

"Against the Panthers in the game [on Sunday], I won't try to split like that," coach Frank Reich said. "We'll just let one guy go. Jacob will probably start and Sam will probably come in whenever."

Reich said Eason was in the "driver's seat" to be the starter in Wentz's absence the day the team announced that the quarterback would be out five to 12 weeks after having left foot surgery on Aug. 2.

Philip Rivers Hasn't Ruled Out Possibly Returning To NFL

Aug 4, 2021 8:51 AM

Philip Rivers hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning to the NFL.

Rivers announced his retirement in January after one season with the Indianapolis Colts.

Rivers is staying in shape in case a situation presents itself for a late-season stint in the NFL.

"I'm not quite there," Rivers, 39, told the Times. "I'm getting back there. I wouldn't have made weight if I had to report last week, that's for sure. But I am getting back into the lifting and running, and shoot, I occasionally throw a ball around out here in this heat. It's not too hard to get a good lather going.

"I'm just going to stay ready. I want to make sure I'm very clear: I'm not predicting I will play in December or January, for that matter. One, you've got to have somebody who wants you, and two, it's got to be right.

"But I have not completely ruled that out."

Quenton Nelson Out 5-12 Weeks With Foot Surgery

Aug 3, 2021 2:25 PM

Quenton Nelson will be out five to 12 weeks with the same foot injury as Carson Wentz.

Dr. David Porter is scheduled to perform the surgery on Nelson on Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis. Porter performed surgery on Wentz's left foot on Monday.

"Where Carson's was an old [high school football] injury that cropped up, Q's was not an old injury," Reich said. "Q's was a developmental anomaly. Something he was kind of born with, something always there, you never know and all of a sudden there it is. They got there different ways, but essentially the same thing. Can't make that up, right?"
