C.J. Stroud Named Texans' Starter Following Preseason Finale

Aug 28, 2023 8:40 AM

DeMeco Ryans named C.J. Stroud the Houston Texans' starting quarterback after the team's preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints.

The No. 2 overall pick will be the Week 1 starter against the Baltimore Ravens.

"It was definitely a blessing, something that I think I worked for and definitely earned," Stroud said. "At the same time, nothing else really changes. Still going to work like the way I'm working but even more now. I'm blessed enough to be able to be a starter, so young in this league, which isn't the easiest thing to do. But I know my coaches have trust and faith in me, so I'll go out there and do my best."

The Texans were the last team in the NFL to name their starter.

Texans' C.J. Stroud Not Worried About QB Competition

Aug 25, 2023 7:04 AM

The Houston Texans are the only team that hasn't named a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the NFL season.

Houston used the No. 2 overall pick on C.J. Stroud this spring.

"I ain't tripping. Just do what's on my plate. I'm not worried about anybody else's plate. I got to focus on what we got going on in this locker room," Stroud said. "And just getting better every day. It's not about any of that stuff. It's about competing every day and just getting better. That's not my job. My job is to go out there and play. I got the fun stuff to do."

DeMeco Ryans declared there would be a quarterback competition going into training camp between Davis Mills and Stroud.

C.J. Stroud Pledges To Grow From Rocky Texans Debut

Aug 11, 2023 8:24 AM

C.J. Stroud vowed to learn from his errors and "keep growing" after struggling in his preseason debut with the Houston Texans on Thursday night.

Stroud went 2-for-4 for 13 yards with an interception in his two series against the New England Patriots.

DeMeco Ryans said he wasn't concerned about his rookie quarterback's struggles and had a positive view on the No. 2 pick's performance.

"We all have things to clean up and get better at, but I thought it was a good first outing," Ryans said. "Good look at live action. I thought it was good for him."

Stroud will aim to correct his mistakes from his debut.

"Got to make a play smarter and not put my defense in a bad situation, put them right in field goal range, and that's my mistake," Stroud said. "Even though I'm a rookie, still trying to play as a vet and play sound football and not only protect my offense but to protect the defense, as well."
