Ochocinco Made A Reserve By Sporting KC

May 16, 2014 11:07 PM

After a five-day tryout, Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco got what he was hoping for Tuesday -- a spot on the reserve team for Sporting Kansas City. Now he'll work out a couple of times a week with the MLS team's reserve squad, which is what he was hoping for all along. "This is so awesome I'm an honorary member of SportingKC and can train with the reserve team as long as I want," Ochocinco said in a tweet. "Totally awesome ILuvKC." As a member of the reserve team, he will not be given a contract or be paid.

Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco was ineffective during a practice game Monday, the fifth day of his tryout with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer. He will meet with coach Peter Vermes on Tuesday and neither man sounded optimistic that his hope of playing professionally would go much further than Monday's reserve game. It was his first organized soccer outing since the 10th grade. "It's been a dream come true for me to be on the pitch, man, with so many of these guys who are elite athletes at the top of their game," Ochocinco said. "I enjoyed it."

Vikmanis, however, spent a year improving her fitness and working on routines and returned to tryouts the following year. She made the squad.

Ochocinco Eating 'Humble Pie' At MLS Tryout

Oct 31, 2014 2:15 PM

Chad Ochocinco was better in the second day of his tryout with Sporting Kansas City of MLS. "First off, (the game at this level is) definitely above him," Sporting head coach Peter Vermes said. "And it's something that's maybe a little surprising to him, how fast the game is and how athletic and technical the guys are with the speed of play. ... I won't say I didn't expect it. I knew this was going to be a little of a long shot for him. I haven't made all my conclusions -- he'll be back (Friday) and will train Saturday -- but these guys (on Sporting) have been doing it every day on a regular basis. "It would be like if one of our guys jumped into an NFL game. It would be foreign to them in some respects: 'How do I get with the pace of the game?' But I know he's definitely enjoying himself, and I know the guys are enjoying their time with him." Ochocinco, who grew up playing soccer in Miami, took advantage of the NFL's lockout to "live a dream I've always wanted to do," was clearly more at ease Thursday. "I'm having fun, but by no means, I'm not delusional," Ochocinco said. "It takes extreme skill to play at this level. ... I have (enhanced) respect for the game and what they're able to do. I think people need to understand: An elite athlete like myself, it takes more than just being athletic to come play at a level like this. ... "By no means did I think I was going to come in here and wow everybody, and in a way, it just lets you know how good these guys really are that I'm eating humble pie. Seriously."

Lewis Wants Bengals To Be 'Proactive' With QB Situation

Jul 18, 2014 10:01 PM

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis wants to move forward no matter what happens with Carson Palmer. Palmer wants Cincinnati to trade him and sources close to the quarterback claim he's willing to retire if he doesn't get his wish. "It's going to be important not to spin our wheels worrying about it and being paralyzed by it but to be proactive," Lewis said. Lewis said he last spoke with Palmer in early February and that the quarterback was positive at the time. "Guys get to points for different reasons," Lewis said. "The fans shouldn't worry about that. If he doesn't want to do this, then this is what we have to do. This is a 24/7 deal for all of us. "A lot of things affect people all the time, but the thing about it is there's a great opportunity ahead and we're going to seize the moment. One guy spoke with the owner of the football team, and he was told where his stand is. Carson knew where things are going to be."

Ochocinco Begins MLS Tryout

Jul 20, 2014 11:30 PM

Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco began his tryout with Sporting Kansas City of MLS on Wednesday morning. "Exactly what I expected," he said. "I would be a little winded being that I haven't ran at this pace or this level since the end of our season of football. It was fun. I didn't expect to come in here and be Superman." Ochocinco plans to go through with the four-day tryout, and, if possible, join the team. "I would play for free," he said. Ochocinco hasn't played soccer since the 10th grade.
