Dennis Pitta Out For Season After Undergoing Hip Surgery

Oct 21, 2014 5:05 PM

Dennis Pitta underwent surgery on his dislocated right hip and is lost for the year. The procedure comes one day after the tight end suffered the non-contact injury in a Week 3 win over the Cleveland Browns.

It's the same right hip that Pitta fractured and dislocated last summer, an injury that cost him much of 2013.

The nature of the injury brings into question whether Pitta's playing career is now in jeopardy.

"I don't know the ramifications of that long term," Harbaugh said. "I'm going to be really hopeful for Dennis' return and I'm sure we'll learn about that in the coming weeks."

Bisciotti: Ravens Never Campaigned For Rice To Receive Lesser Penalty

Oct 28, 2014 6:35 AM

Steve Bisciotti says no one from the Baltimore Ravens ever discussed potential discipline for Ray Rice with Roger Goodell or the NFL.

"I expected four or six games," said Biscotti.

Biscotti was stunned that Rice would be suspended for just two games.

An ESPN report last week indicated that the Ravens campaigned for leniency for Rice.

Report: Ravens Misdirected Rice Case, NFL Did Scant Investigation

Oct 21, 2014 4:32 PM

"Outside the Lines" interviewed more than 20 sources over the past 11 days -- team officials, current and former league officials, NFL Players Association representatives and associates, advisers and friends of Ray Rice -- and found a pattern of misinformation and misdirection employed by the Ravens and the NFL since he assaulted Janay Rice in an Atlantic City elevator.

The NFL took an uncharacteristically passive approach when it came to gathering evidence, opening itself up to widespread criticism, allegations of inconsistent approaches to player discipline and questions about whether Roger Goodell gave Rice -- the corporate face of the Baltimore franchise -- a light punishment as a favor to his good friend Steve Bisciotti. Four sources said Ravens executives, including Bisciotti and Ozzie Newsome, urged Goodell and other league executives to give Rice no more than a two-game suspension, and that's what Goodell did on July 24.

Goodell has been committed to player discipline, but did not immediately act when he learned verbally or visually of Rice's actions.

Within hours of the elevator attack, an employee of the Ravens was describing the inside-elevator video to friends in graphic detail, telling confidants that Rice knocked out his then-fiancée with a punch and that the video was "really bad," according to a source close to a Ravens official.

John Harbaugh urged the Ravens to release Rice immediately, according to sources.

Ray Rice, NFLPA To Appeal Indefinite Suspension

Sep 16, 2014 1:12 PM

Ray Rice is expected to appeal his indefinite suspension from the NFL, sources confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens this past Monday, just hours after TMZ released a video of him punching his then-fiancée in a casino elevator.

The NFL suspended Rice indefinitely shortly after his release, a far more severe penalty than the two-game suspension the league had handed down in July.

The NFLPA still has not finalized its plan on a basis for the appeal and is considering multiple ideas, sources told Schefter.

ProFootballTalk.com reported earlier Sunday that Rice planned to appeal the suspension.

Sources Contradict Goodell's Story About Conversation With Rice

Sep 13, 2014 2:24 AM

Ray Rice told Roger Goodell on June 16 that he punched his then-fiancee in a casino elevator, four sources have told "Outside the Lines," an assertion that contradicts Goodell's statement this week that "when we met with Ray Rice and his representatives, it was ambiguous about what actually happened."

Goodell made the statement Tuesday during an interview with CBS News, saying the latest video released by TMZ Sports about the incident was "inconsistent" with what Rice said.

But four sources close to Rice say that during the disciplinary meeting in the commissioner's office on June 16, Rice told Goodell he had hit Janay Rice, then his fiancee, in the face inside a Revel Casino Hotel elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and had knocked her unconscious.

"Ray didn't lie to the commissioner," a source with knowledge of the meeting told "Outside the Lines." "He told the full truth to Goodell -- he made it clear he had hit her, and he told Goodell he was sorry and that it wouldn't happen again."

"He told the truth," a second source said. "This is a public lynching of Ray."

Ray Rice Video Was Sent To NFL By Law Enforcement Official

Sep 18, 2014 3:47 PM

A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancée to an NFL executive five months ago, while league executives have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week.

The official played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

He said he was unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited because he wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.

The NFL has repeatedly said it asked for but could not obtain the video of Rice hitting Janay Palmer -- who is now his wife -- at an Atlantic City casino in February.

The league says it has no record of the video and that no one in the league office had seen it until it was released by TMZ on Monday. Asked about the voicemail Wednesday, NFL officials repeated their assertion that no league official had seen the video before Monday.

"We have no knowledge of this," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday. "We are not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday. We will look into it."

NFL, Ravens Never Sought Video Of Ray Rice Assault

Dec 7, 2014 12:46 AM

A copy of the security camera footage of Ray Rice punching Janay Palmer was given to Atlantic City police within an hour of the incident, according the former security staffer.

In the hours and days after the assault, staffers replayed the security-camera footage hundreds of times, a former staffer said. He said a mention of Rice spitting on Palmer was noted in an internal security report, which he told "Outside the Lines" he had read "multiple times."

That former staffer estimates that 25 to 30 Revel security staffers saw the security camera footage of Rice striking Palmer. All of the staffers who spoke with "Outside the Lines" say they were not contacted by anyone from NFL security or the Ravens and they are not aware of any current or former co-workers who have been. The TMZ Sports video was shot off a video monitor with a cellphone camera, one former staffer told "Outside the Lines."

"The first thing he [Rice] said is, 'She's intoxicated. She drank too much. I'm just trying to get her to the room,'" one staffer said.

"When she regained consciousness she said, 'How could you do this to me? I'm the mother of your kid,'" that same staffer told "Outside the Lines."

NFL, Ravens Never Asked Casino To See Rice Elevator Video

Oct 31, 2014 10:32 AM

The NFL and the Baltimore Ravens were adamant that they never saw video of Ray Rice striking his then-fiancee Janay Rice before it was released to the public on Monday by TMZ.

TMZ reports the NFL never asked the casino to see footage from the security cameras.

The NFL sent out another statement Tuesday morning, reading, "Security for Atlantic City casinos is handled by the New Jersey State Police. Any videos related to an ongoing criminal investigation are held in the custody of the state police. As we said yesterday: We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us."

TMZ also that Rice's lawyer also had a copy of the video.

Ravens Release Ray Rice

Sep 13, 2014 12:09 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have released Ray Rice.

The release comes following a video of him striking his wife Janet Palmer and knocking her unconscious leaked Monday through TMZ.

Rice was previously on a two-game suspension issued by the NFL.

The NFL also took action, saying on Twitter that commissioner "Roger Goodell has announced that based on new video evidence that became available today he has indefinitely suspended Ray Rice."

The NFL Players Association told ESPN in an email that it had no comment on the termination of Rice's contract or his indefinite suspension by the NFL.
