49ers Beat Commanders, Get Help To Clinch NFC's No. 1 Seed

Dec 31, 2023 6:11 PM

As the 49ers filed into their locker room following Sunday's win over the Commanders, they were greeted by team CEO Jed York with a handshake and a score update.

The Cardinals had just taken the lead against the Eagles with 32 seconds remaining, leaving the Niners a few plays away from wrapping up the NFC's No. 1 seed, along with the first-round bye and home-field advantage.

Niners players and coaches rushed to a tiny corner and huddled around a small television showing the final seconds. When Jalen Hurts' last-gasp throw was intercepted, the room burst into loud cheers and a wild celebration.

With the Niners' 27-10 win, the Cardinals' victory against Philadelphia and the Dallas Cowboys' controversial win against the Detroit Lions on Saturday night, the NFC's road to the Super Bowl runs through Levi's Stadium.

Nick Sirianni: Any Criticism Of Offense Should Be On Me

Dec 21, 2023 8:27 AM

Having already made a change at defensive coordinator, criticism of the Philadelphia Eagles' offense remains.

Nick Sirianni says any criticism of the team's offense should be pointed to him.

During Philadelphia's three-game losing streak, the Eagles have failed to score more than 19 points in a game.

"We have to put the players in more positions to create explosive plays," Sirianni said.

"But make no mistake about it, this offense is being run the exact same way the offense was run last year and the year before that. This offense is my offense; right? This is my offense. So, the criticism on the offense I think unfairly goes to [first-year offensive coordinator] Brian [Johnson]. Brian calls the plays. Brian calls the plays. It unfairly goes to Brian. The criticism on this offense should come at me because this is my offense. I was hired to do a job here and got hired because I was successful as an offensive coordinator with our schemes and the different things that we did to coach players and help players win. I'm committed to that. Like I said, the criticism should come at me, and I think it unfairly goes at Brian a lot of the times because he’s calling the plays."

Jalen Hurts Calls Out Eagles For Not Being 'Committed Enough'

Dec 20, 2023 8:48 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles have lost three-straight games to fall to 10-4.

After a late collapse against Seattle Seahawks on Monday night, Jalen Hurts called out the team for a lack of commitment.

"I've been talking about execution all year, being on the same page, everyone being on the same page," the quarterback said. "We didn't execute. I don't think we're, we're all, we're committed enough. Just got to turn it around. You know, it's a challenge that we have to embrace. Just continue to see it through."

Asked what he meant by not being committed, Hurts responded: "Commitment. I don't have a dictionary on me now. ... I don't know how else to say that."

Nick Sirianni Says It Was His Call To Make Defensive Coordinator Move

Dec 19, 2023 8:13 AM

Nick Sirianni addressed his decision to demote Sean Desai and name Matt Patricia his defensive coordinator after the Philadelphia Eagles' 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

The loss extended the Eagles' losing streak to three games.

Players were notified of the change early last week and Patricia ran the defensive meetings during the lead-up to the Seattle game.

"I made the decision," Sirianni said. "I did what I thought I needed to do in the best interest of the football team. We made some adjustments there. Didn't feel like we were playing and coaching well enough on defense, so I made an adjustment."

The defense held Seattle to 90 yards and three points before intermission, allowing the Eagles to build a halftime lead for the first time in seven games.

The second half was a different story. The Seahawks outpaced Philadelphia 17-7 to close the game. They went ahead for good when Jaxon Smith-Njigba got behind James Bradberry and caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Drew Lock with under 30 seconds remaining.

The Philadelphia Eagles have downgraded Jalen Hurts to questionable for Monday night's game against the Seattle Seahawks after the quarterback's sickness worsened overnight, the team announced Sunday.

Eagles: It's 'Time To See The Real Leadership' After Latest Loss

Dec 11, 2023 11:16 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles were thumped by the Dallas Cowboys 33-13 on Sunday night, their second-straight decisive loss to an NFC contender.

"I think the biggest thing for this team now is really find out who the dudes are," Fletcher Cox said.

"I've been a part of teams where the dudes in the locker room do something about it, and I've been part of teams where it kind of crumbles. And now it's time to see the real leadership, the real players, the guys that's elite on this team, myself included, step up and do something about it."

The Eagles were outscored by the Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers by a combined 43 points over the past two games.

"This is something we're going through, not necessarily stuck in," said Hurts, who finished 18-of-27 passing for 197 yards and committed a momentum-stalling fumble on the team's first offensive possession. "We have to be able to learn from it, and we will. There's an eagerness to continue to press on."

Jason Kelce: Eagles 'Not Good Enough Right Now'

Dec 4, 2023 8:58 AM

After winning a series of close games, the Philadelphia Eagles were drubbed by the San Francisco 49ers 42-19 on Sunday afternoon.

At 10-2, the Eagles have just a one game lead over the Niners, Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions -- all 9-3 -- for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

"We're not good enough right now," Jason Kelce said. "Obviously, disappointed in the way we performed, didn't get it done today. But we've still got some games left, a lot of football to learn from. I still have the utmost confidence in everybody in this locker room on both sides of the ball. This game doesn't do anything to sway that."

The Eagles had trailed at halftime in each of their previous four games but managed to rally and win all of them, tying an NFL record.
