Texans Likely To Upgrade At Receiver Via Draft

Jul 26, 2014 8:31 AM

Upgrading at wide receiver will likely be a top priority for the Texans and the draft may be their best opportunity to do so. Houston is operating near the salary cap. The Texans have the 26th pick in the first round and they need an infusion of youth and talent at receiver. Andre Johnson turns 31 in July. Kevin Walter turns 31 in August. Johnson and Walter will be entering their 10th season.

Reed: Flacco Was 'Rattled' By Houston's D

May 18, 2014 12:55 AM

Embattled Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco isn't going to find much support from his own teammates on the other side of the ball. Baltimore had just 227 total yards of offensive in their narrow playoff win over Houston on Sunday. Ravens safety Ed Reed says Flacco will have to perform better if the team is going to knock off the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. "I think Joe was kind of rattled a little bit by (Houston's) defense," Reed said on SiriusXM NFL Radio earlier this week. "(The Texans) had a lot of guys in the box on him. And, I mean, they were getting to him. I think a couple times he needed to get rid of the ball. I don't know how much of the play-calling ... but it just didn't look like he had a hold on the offense. ... It was just kind of like (Baltimore's coaches) was telling him to do, throw the ball or get it here, you know, get it to certain guys. And he can't play like that." Flacco was sacked five times and hurried by Texans defenders more than that in the win. Reed said Tuesday part of the blame for that falls on Baltimore's offensive line. "[T]he offensive line gotta block better," Reed said. "You know, they gotta communicate better, gotta pick up blocks (and) Joe's gotta get the ball out of his hand."

Texans tight end Owen Daniels may have suffered a broken hand during the team's playoff win over the Bengals on Saturday. Daniels will undergo an MRI, but should be able to play going forward because he didn't suffer a compound fracture in which the bone penetrates the skin and has to be surgically reattached.

Phillips: I 'Should Be Considered' For Head Coach Jobs

Sep 8, 2014 5:37 AM

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips believes that he "should be considered" for head coaching jobs in the future. Phillips was fired as the Cowboys coach midway through the 2010 season and hired by the Texans soon after. Houston's defense has made a remarkable turnaround in his first season as coordinator, improving from 30th in 2010 to second overall this year. "I don't like to toot my own horn," said Phillips, who implemented a 3-4 scheme in Houston. "I've got a good record. I think I should be considered. I guess people may have taken it the wrong way that I ought to be a head coach. I don't believe that. I think I should be considered. If you look at my record, and you can look at all the people they're talking about now, and my record is better than most everyone they're talking about, as a head coach."
