Seven Teams Alive For AFC's Wild Card Berths

Sep 14, 2014 6:38 AM

With just one weekend left in the regular season there are seven teams fighting for the AFC's two Wild Card berths. The Colts and Chargers have locked down the first and second seeds, respectively, and will have first-round byes. The Patriots and Bengals have each won their division and at 10-5 Sunday's outcomes will decide which team wins the third seed. Currently, the Broncos and Jets hold the Wild Card spots, but the Ravens, Texans, Steelers, Dolphins and Jaguars are all still alive. Even if Denver wins, they would lose tiebreakers to Jets and Ravens if both New York and Baltimore win as well. The Jets can clinch a playoff berth if they win. Baltimore controls their own destiny as well. A victory gives them a tie-breaker edge over Denver even if the Broncos win. The Texans need to win and see the two of the three teams ahead of them (Denver, New York and Baltimore) lose. The Steelers would get in with a win and a loss by two of the three teams above them (Houston, New York and Baltimore). In order for the Dolphins to make the postseason they need to win and see the Jets, Ravens, Texans and Jaguars lose. The Jaguars have the lowest odds. They need to win and watch at least four of the six teams ahead of them lose.

Shanahan's Son Could Ditch Texans To Join Him In D.C.

Sep 30, 2014 6:53 AM

Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan could join his father, Mike Shanahan, in Washington. Mike Shanahan hasn't been hired officially by the Redskins, but he's reportedly in line to take over if Jim Zorn is fired. Whether his son wants to join him remains to be seen. ?We all know that's part of football and as far as Kyle or any coach I have, I want what's best for them,? coach Gary Kubiak said. ?I think we've all known that if Mike gets back in the business, which it looks like he will, that his son coaching for him someday is very important to him. ?You can't help but hear this and that, but we don't talk about it. He's doing a tremendous job. He's done a great job with Matt (Schaub).?

Owner Gives Kubiak Slight Vote Of Confidence

Jul 3, 2014 2:56 AM

Texans owner Bob McNair won't evaluate coach Gary Kubiak until after the season. McNair is disappointed by the team's 5-6 record. "Right now, I have a coach," McNair said Tuesday. "Since I have a coach, and I haven't made any decisions to replace my coach, I'm not even thinking about anybody else. I'm just thinking about winning this next game against Jacksonville." Houston has five games to try and get back into the playoff picture. "This is a critical time," McNair said. "My true feeling is we have our best chance of developing a winning team with Gary as opposed to someone else, at this point in time. Making a change is very disruptive. "This is a critical time. I want to see how Gary manages it. In the past, he's managed it very well when his back's been against the wall. I hope he will now because I think he's very sound. "Even though you're very sound and have a good relationship with the players, you still have to get them to perform. If we win the next five games, we'd be 10-6 and in the playoff race. That would be an outstanding performance. If we lose the next five, well, we're in trouble."
