Gruden Wants To Move Up For Johnson?

Jul 21, 2014 2:11 PM

Jon Gruden might have to wait until the Bucs pick fourth overall next month, but it's clear he would prefer not to. It's also becoming more obvious the player Tampa Bay would consider moving up for is Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson. Like many teams, the Bucs were blown away by Johnson's pro day workout March 15 in Atlanta. "You put his body on at the combine and you have this big guy looking at you on the big screen with his shirt off and he's chiseled and he's 6-5 and 240 pounds and he runs 4.36 for us," Gruden said. "Then he jumps 11-7 and he's mad as hell at himself. I've been doing this 16 years and I've never seen 11-7, especially from a 6-5, 240-pound guy. Then he jumps 44 1/2 inches and he's mad as hell, he thinks he should've gotten 47. And he's a great kid. He'll look you in the eye and he wants to be good. Everybody you talk to at Georgia Tech says that's a good kid right there, that Calvin Johnson. He's going to be a great player. "I think the next couple weeks when we get all the information and do all the behind-the-scenes, one-on-one work on these guys, there's a chance. You go and you get a private day with two or three of these guys, and there's a lot to learn when you work out a guy privately. But there's a chance we could move up."

Unrestricted free agent Cato June, one of the NFL's top "cover two" linebackers, is headed to the team that all but invented the scheme that helped make him a Pro Bowl performer. June, who helped lead the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl XLI championship in 2006, on Saturday reached agreement with the Tampa Bay Bucs on a three-year contract. June visited with Bucs officials and coaches on Friday and the two sides struck a quick deal.

Moss To Tampa Bay For Plummer?

Oct 21, 2014 11:16 PM

According to SI.com, the Bucs are one of three teams interested in possibly trading for Raiders receiver Randy Moss. The Raiders have not responded to the speculation, but it wasn't long after the report surfaced Wednesday that football pundits began suggesting this might explain why the league has yet to receive Plummer's retirement papers. With the Raiders in the market for a quarterback, there was talk in league circles that the Bucs might try to make Plummer part of a deal for Moss. The hole in that theory, of course, is Plummer's supposed retirement plans.

Bucs Sign B.J. Askew

Oct 30, 2014 5:17 PM

Tampa Bay bolstered their backfield Sunday, signing fullback B.J. Askew at undisclosed terms. The signing marks the latest move in what has been a busy weekend for the Buccaneers, who signed free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia on Saturday and re-signed cornerback Phillip Buchanon a day earlier. Askew, 26, was used primarily as a lead blocker in his four-year NFL career with the New York Jets. The 233-pound fullback ran for 11 yards on six carries and hauled in nine catches for 50 yards in 13 games last season.

Tampa Bay Completes Plummer Trade

May 12, 2014 9:47 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia on Saturday and obtained the rights to Jake Plummer from Denver, adding two quarterbacks to compete with Chris Simms next season. Plummer, who reportedly was thinking of retiring if he was traded, was sent to the Buccaneers for a conditional 2008 draft choice, the Broncos said. The 37-year-old Garcia, who last year led Philadelphia to the playoffs filling in for the injured Donovan McNabb, agreed to terms a day after talking with the Oakland Raiders. The signing was reported on the Bucs' web site.

Plummer Thinking Retirement Before Trade?

Sep 30, 2014 1:04 PM

Jake Plummer's status with the Denver Broncos remained in limbo Friday night. The quarterback who lost his starting job last season reportedly would rather retire than accept a trade to Tampa Bay, as the NFL Network and other media sources reported Friday afternoon. "The couple of times he broached the subject with me, I felt like he was done," Eric Plummer told the Associated Press on Friday night. "As soon as the season was over, he was talking about the fact he didn't know if he wanted to keep playing anymore. He never decided 100 percent."
