Bears Waive Tank Johnson

May 18, 2014 4:11 AM

The Bears stood by and supported Tank Johnson throughout a series of transgressions, but violating the club?s no-tolerance policy cost him his job. The Bears on Monday waived the troubled defensive tackle, who was pulled over and arrested by police in Arizona at 3:30 a.m. Friday. ?We are upset and embarrassed by Tank?s actions last week,? said general manager Jerry Angelo. ?He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn?t, and we have decided to move on.? Johnson was released from Cook County Jail May 13 after serving 60 days for a probation violation stemming from a gun charge. On June 3, he was suspended by the NFL without pay for the first eight games of the regular season for violating the league?s personal conduct policy. While Johnson was in jail, he was visited by several members of the Bears organization including Angelo, coach Lovie Smith, chairman of the board Michael McCaskey and several teammates. ?A lot of people within our organization gave extra time and energy to support Tank: players, coaches and our front office,? Smith said. ?We did our best to establish an environment for him to move forward. Ultimately, Tank needed to live up to his side of the deal.?

Urlacher Wears Briggs No. 55 During Practice

Oct 1, 2014 11:44 PM

With five weeks left until the start of training camp, linebacker Brian Urlacher understandably had nothing to say Wednesday on his way off the field after the Bears' final organized team activity. Urlacher already had made a statement anyway, subtle yet significant, by wearing Lance Briggs' No. 55 during practice in support of a teammate locked in a contract dispute with the Bears bound only to get worse.

Grossman Has No Hard Feelings About 'Joke'

Oct 27, 2014 4:49 AM

Tommie Harris called it a matter of no offense intended. Rex Grossman insisted there was none taken. The two Bears shook hands for the cameras Monday, but said there really was no reason for apologies. Harris, while in Philadelphia attending a fundraiser for the Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb's foundation, had made a few comments to reporters -- in what he later described as "jest" -- about wanting McNabb to play for the Bears. Any possible bad feelings on the part of Grossman toward Harris for the comments appeared nonexistent Monday at Halas Hall in Lake Forest. "It was never really started," Grossman said about bad feelings. "It's not that big a deal."

Grossman Not Laughing Over McNabb Talk

Oct 7, 2014 1:59 AM

The first time he mentioned the idea of Donovan McNabb playing for the Bears?and winning a Super Bowl?the media throng gathered around him let it go. Same for the second time ? and the third. But by the time Bears defensive lineman Tommie Harris had floated the idea of Mt. Carmel's McNabb joining the Bears and ending their long Super Bowl championship hibernation, it was too much to let go. Speaking this weekend from Philadelphia, where Harris was a guest of McNabb's at the quarterback's charity golf tournament, the D-lineman had this to say: "I'd love to have [McNabb] as my quarterback in Chicago. ? Hopefully, he comes here and helps the Chicago Bears win the Super Bowl. ? If he comes to Chicago, we'll definitely win the Super Bowl. ? He's my friend and I would like him to play on my team. ? I'd love him to play for the Bears." Harris backtracked on Saturday on WSCR-AM 670, saying he was kidding and if incumbent starter Rex Grossman was offended, Harris would apologize.

Chris Brown Getting Close To Decision Between Bears And Titans

Sep 4, 2014 9:14 PM

Agent Wynn Silberman told the Tennessean newspaper that talks continue with the Titans and Bears and free-agent running back Chris Borwn is "getting closer to closing a deal." Silberman said the offers are very similar and "it is very possible that in the next four or five days we will have this thing finished." Brown, a third-round pick by the Titans in 2003, is a graduate of Naperville North who played college ball at Northwestern before following coach Gary Barnett from Evanston to Colorado. "There are good possibilities for both sides," Silberman told the newspaper. "Chris could go to Chicago. It's his hometown; he has family there; he's comfortable there; and there is a possibility they very easily could make another championship run. With Thomas Jones gone, Chris could see himself in the role Jones had last year. "On the other hand, he could come back to Tennessee, where he has a good relationship with Coach [Jeff] Fisher; he knows the system; and he could potentially compete for the starting job. That's compelling too."
