Cam Newton Walks Out On Media After Question About Offense

Oct 26, 2017 8:24 AM

Cam Newton abruptly walked out of his Wednesday news conference after a question about the Carolina Panthers' ability to consistently get yardage in "big chunks."

Newton paused when asked the question, rolled his eyes and answered with "next question." He then exited.

"Cam didn't intend to be discourteous toward any specific media member," Panthers spokesman Steven Drummond said. "In his mind, after answering questions for nine minutes he had fulfilled his obligations."

Newton's exit came a week after he did not fulfill his weekly media obligations and speak on Wednesday or Thursday.

It also came two weeks after he publicly apologized for making light of a football question from a female reporter, Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer.

Christian McCaffrey Could Break Rookie Reception Record

Oct 13, 2017 8:47 AM

Christian McCaffrey had 10 catches for the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night, giving him 37 through six games.

McCaffrey is on pace to finish with 99 receptions, near the NFL record for rookies. Anquan Boldin had 101 catches in his first season in 2003.

The rookie mark for a running back was set by Reggie Bush in 2006 (88).

McCaffrey has caught at least four passes in every game this season.

Cam Newton Apologizes For Response To Female Reporter

Oct 6, 2017 7:53 AM

A day after questioning a female reporter's football knowledge, Cam Newton apologized Thursday via social media for what he called an "extremely degrading and disrespectful" choice of words.

Charlotte Observer beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton during Wednesday's news conference about Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of routes and whether Newton got enjoyment out of that.

Newton laughed and responded, "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes like ... it's funny."

Rodrigue confronted Newton after the news conference, but he did not apologize.

"After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women," Newton said in his statement. "And to be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.

"I'm a man who tries to be a positive role model to my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others. I take ownership to everything that comes with that. What I did was extremely unacceptable."

The video came about nine hours after a spokesperson for Dannon Oikos Yogurt said the company no longer would use Newton in its commercials and advertisements and would begin pulling those immediately.

Cam Newton Laughs At Female Reporter's Question

Oct 5, 2017 8:55 AM

Cam Newton laughed when a female reporter asked about one of his teammates on Wednesday, saying it was "funny to hear a female" ask the question.

Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton about Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of routes and if the quarterback got enjoyment out of that.

"It's funny to hear a female talk about routes like -- it's funny," he replied.

Panthers director of communications Steven Drummond said in a statement that he spoke with Newton and Rodrigue "and I know they had a conversation where he expressed regret for using those words. We strive as a department to make the environment for media comfortable for everyone covering the team."

Rodrigue said in a statement that Newton did not apologize.

"This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs," Rodrigue said. "I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments."
