Jets Deal For Jeff Otah Voided

Jeff Otah failed his physical with the Jets, voiding the terms of his trade from the Panthers. New York wanted Otah to compete for the starting job at right tackle. "He did everything we asked for the past week and the terms of the trade weren't met so he's going back to Carolina," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.

Newton Backs Kalil's Super Bowl Promise

Cam Newton says he supports teammate Ryan Kalil, who recently promised a Super Bowl victory this season. "Well, if anybody on this team, if they go out on a limb and make a statement, we have to back him up 110 percent, every single play," Newton said. "We're out here trying to sharpen plays and work on technique. And we're just going to try to do our part. Each day and each play at a time." After winning four of their last six games in 2011, the Panthers believe they have what it takes to be competitive in 2012.

Ryan Kalil expects the Panthers to have a very successful season. The veteran center bought a full-page ad in the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday, telling Panthers fans their "unwavering support" would be rewarded this year. Kalil has a goal in mind how fans would reap the benefits with what he said is "One hundred-percent, sterling silver victory. The Lombardi Trophy." Carolina finished 6-10 last season, the first for coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Cam Newton.

Jets Acquire Jeff Otah From Panthers

The Jets have acquired Jeff Otah from the Panthers in an effort to solidify the right tackle position. New York sent a conditional draft pick to Carolina, who made Otah a first-round pick in 2008. A source said the pick is a seventh-round selection. Otah and incumbent right tackle Wayne Hunter will compete for the starting job, according to league sources.

Newton To Attend Carolina's Rookie Camp

Cam Newton will be among the players in attendance for Carolina's rookie camp to work on his timing with the first-year receivers. "That'll give us a chance to get those guys a little more acclimated because they really didn't get a chance to participate in minicamp," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. "It'll give us a chance to see where they all are. Hopefully, they're all 100 percent."

The decision to rename a portion of a street in South Fulton, Georgia after Cam Newton is being met with resistance. At a public hearing last week, residents objected to the costs they would incur switching their records to Cam Newton Drive. They also brought up Newton's collegiate indiscretions as a reason not to have a road named after the Panthers quarterback.

Newton Takes Heat For Charging For Autographs

Cam Newton will appear at a mall this weekend and sign autographs for anyone willing to pay at least $125. Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler takes Newton to task for charging for his signature, saying that it's a false step for a guy who usually comes across as sincerely grateful. "The Panthers pay Newton plenty of money," Folwer writes. "Charging for autographs in Charlotte seems a little cheap."
