Raiders Didn't Have Personnel To Fully Use Allen's Defensive Scheme

Nov 22, 2014 9:16 PM

Dennis Allen has yet to deploy his entire defensive scheme with the Oakland Raiders because he didn't have the personnel in 2012.

Cornerback is the Raiders' biggest position of need on defense and part of the reason why Allen couldn't use his full defensive scheme.

Lions Saw Fewest Number Of Defenders In Box

Oct 27, 2014 8:26 AM

The Detroit Lions ran more offensive snaps against defenses with six or fewer players in the box than any team in the NFL, largely due to the extra attention Calvin Johnson receives.

Despite facing six-man fronts, the Lions were unable to effectively run the ball.

The Lions broke only four carries for 20 or more yards, which is also a symptom of seeing defenders on the second level.

Saints Expect Vilma To Find New Role In 3-4 Defense

Oct 26, 2014 2:58 AM

Sean Payton believes Jonathan Vilma will have a role in the New Orleans Saints' 3-4 defense.

Payton said he can see Vilma playing an outside linebacker spot in the new 3-4 scheme.

"Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to place him over that guard bubble and have to take on that block," Payton said. "And I think he's a guy that runs to the ball and has great vision, very instinctual football player. I think you take some of that away if all of a sudden he's playing over an uncovered guard and now his size becomes an issue.

"A lot of things may concern you with a player change. So, he'll play over on that weakside position and I that will be very similar to what he did this past year. Curtis Lofton, who's a little heavier, will play on that strong inside Mike position. So I think that part of it for those two guys transition pretty well."

Vilma is scheduled to make $4.8 million in base salary and hold a salary cap figure of $8.6 million.

Vick Believes He Can Run For 1k Yards In Kelly's Offense

Oct 27, 2014 8:26 AM

Michael Vick believes he can be rejuvenated as a running quarterback under Chip Kelly.

"In 2006 I ran for 1,000 yards -- and it wasn't hard," Vick said. "The only thing you have to do is train. I feel like I can still do that. To what level, I don't know, but I feel like I can do it at a high level."

Vick has missed 13 games over three seasons as the starting quarterback of the Eagles.

"You have to be very cautious and meticulous about what you're doing on the field, but not to the point where it takes away from your game. Once you start trying not to get hurt, that's when you get hurt," Vick said. "I think what I have to do is just go out and play lights-out football, and not worry about getting hurt. I think over the last two years, I was trying to protect myself, trying to be sure that I was out on the football field with my teammates, just putting too much effort into not being injured. When you do that, it slows you down just half a second. I think when you're able to just go out and say, 'today I'm going to give it everything I've got' and leave it all out on the field, that's when you have the most success."

Garrett Planning 'Tweaks' To Cowboys' Offense

Oct 28, 2014 2:25 PM

Jason Garrett plans on making a few "tweaks" to the Dallas Cowboys' offense.

"This is an opportunity to add some people and add some influence to our offense," Garrett said. "And hopefully it's a tweak for us that can help us get a little bit better and help us break through as a football team. So that's really the approach right now we want to stay on the same track but also we want to add coaches to our staff that can really help us break through."

49ers May Need To Increase Situational Usage On Defense

Jun 3, 2014 5:54 PM

The San Francisco 49ers may need to change their approach on defense in 2013 due to the accumulating miles on Justin Smith.

Smith ranks among the NFL's top four defensive linemen in total snaps over the past two seasons, counting playoffs.

Teammate Ray McDonald is also on the list.

The 49ers rotate a smaller number of defensive players than most teams.

DeSean Jackson Excited For Role In Chip Kelly's Offense

Jun 3, 2014 4:43 AM

DeSean Jackson is excited about how his role will evolve in the Philadelphia Eagles' offense with Chip Kelly as head coach.

“Kind of similar to what DeAnthony Thomas was doing at Oregon. He’s like a little brother to me. I actually talked to him," Jackson said of Thomas. "He was passing on information to me, like I’m going to be pumped up and psyched to be in that offense. It just keeps defenses off guard any time you go in motion, fake play-action, go down the field. There’s just so many things you can do.”
