Redskins Sticking With Helu As Starter

Jun 28, 2014 1:54 AM

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says rookie Roy Helu will remain the team's starting running back. Helu had 108 yards rushing and 54 yards receiving against the Seahawks on Sunday. He hurdled a defender during a 28-yard touchdown run that ignited Washington's fourth quarter comeback. The fourth-round pick from Nebraska has one other start this season -- on Nov. 6 against San Francisco.

Redskins Won't Cut Hall

Oct 9, 2014 9:01 PM

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall suggested that the team cut him after their overtime loss to the Cowboys last Sunday, but coach Mike Shanahan isn't going to do so. Shanahan said Monday that the cornerback is exactly the type of guy he's looking for on his roster. "You want players that play with the mindset of perfection," Shanahan said. "When you do give up the play, regardless of what the play is, you want to take it very personal. "And I think a number of our players do that on our football team, which gives you the chance to get better. If you don't have that type of mindset, and you say 'Hey, it's just another play,' then you're not made of the right stuff."

Gaffney Downplays Angry Tweets Towards Cowboys Fan

Oct 29, 2014 4:22 PM

Redskins wide receiver Jabar Gaffney is downplaying his tweet to a Cowboys fan to "get a life or kill urself." Gaffney directed profane tweets at the fan after the Redskins lost 27-24 in overtime to Dallas on Sunday. When the fan taunted Gaffney over Washington's losing record, Gaffney responded: "3-7 ain't a record to be proud of I'm just proud I ain't you get a life or kill urself." Gaffney later tweeted that he didn't really want the fan to kill himself. On Monday, Gaffney said: "It's something that got took out of 'text. Cowboy fans, that's how they are. I was just telling the dude: 'Y'all won. All right, leave me alone. Don't talk to me.' And that's all it was."

Hall Says Redskins Should Cut Him Following Loss

Oct 9, 2014 10:29 PM

Following his team's 27-24 overtime loss to the Cowboys on Sunday, Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said the team should cut him loose. "The way I'm playing right now, they need to go and cut me, because I'm definitely not worth what I'm getting," Hall said. "It's frustrating. "Hopefully they see something in me and bring me back next year. But the way things are going right now, I'm definitely not playing up to par." The source of Hall's dejection was a critical third-and-15 situation the Cowboys converted in overtime, when receiver Dez Bryant beat Hall for a 26-yard reception that set up the winning field goal. It also didn't help that Hall allowed Bryant to get behind him for a 22-yard touchdown on the Cowboys' opening drive.

Cofield Warns It Could Get 'Ugly' In Washington

Jun 27, 2014 2:14 PM

Mired in a five-game losing streak, Redskins defensive tackle Barry Cofield warned that the team could drop the rest of its games if it doesn't make significant changes. The Redskins started the season 3-1 but have not won since Oct. 2. Cofield warned that the team had to make a quick turnaround before things get "ugly." "There's no guarantee that we can win another game," Cofield said. "We just don't have a team on our schedule that's just going to lay down and let us beat 'em. If we don't play better, then there's no reason to expect to win any games. The ball's just not going to bounce our way, and so it could get very ugly. It could get historically ugly. "Hopefully guys are fearful of that, and hopefully guys focus in and just come together and do whatever it takes to get a win -- because if we don't, then it's going to be a very very long winter."

Orakpo: Opponents 'Know They're Going To Win'

Jul 9, 2014 9:29 AM

Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo was brutally honest after the team's fifth straight loss on Sunday afternoon. "I'm just frustrated, man. Pissed off. Tired of losing," Orakpo told The Washington Post. "I don't know, man. It's just frustrating. You're trying to hold your head up, but it's just frustrating and we just can't get it together. It's like every team we're going to play, they already know they're going to win because of the way we're playing. It's just ridiculous, man. We've got to figure out a way to turn this (expletive) around." Orakpo wasn't done. "I wish I had an answer for you, man. It's frustrating. We just have to dig deep," he continued. "It's cliche, but I'm running out of material. I've never been through something like this before. We just have to keep fighting, man. I know we've got a great team. I know we've got great character. (But) forget the character, we've got great players on this team. Great playmakers. We just have to put it all together."

Helu Breaks Redskins' Receptions Record

Oct 31, 2014 1:37 PM

Redskins rookie running back Roy Helu got his first career start Sunday. He unexpectedly set a franchise record for most catches in a game. Helu had 14 receptions, breaking the old mark set twice by Hall of Fame receiver Art Monk and once more by running back Kelvin Bryant. "To be honest, I don't care," Helu said afterward. "That's just to be honest. ... All I care about are my brothers on this team. They're hurting because I can't make plays on the field." Helu caught 14 passes for 105 yards, but was haunted by a fumble after he took a second-quarter pass from John Beck, one forced by 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis. A play later, San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith found fullback Bruce Miller for a 30-yard touchdown that put the Redskins in a 13-0 hole.
