Victor Cruz hopes the New York Giants draft an outside receiver.
Cruz became a big-play receiver out of the slot when Hakeem Nicks was the bigger threat outside.
“A [big-play receiver] is something we need in this offense to be successful,” Cruz said. “An outside guy that can do the job and that can help fuel all the other receivers in the locker room and put some fire up under them to get them where they have to be.”
Cruz said Mike Evans of Texas A&M could be the type of receiver the Giants need. The Giants select 12th overall and there's a good chance Evans is already off the board by then.
The 2014 NFL schedule will begin with the Green Bay Packers playing at the Seattle Seahawks in a Thursday night game in Week 1.
The Sunday night game in Week 1 will feature the Indianapolis Colts at the Denver Broncos.
The Seahawks will play at the San Francisco 49ers in the Week 13/Thanksgiving night game. The two teams meet again in Week 15 on Dec. 14.
Eli Manning underwent ankle surgery earlier this month that was never able to heal naturally on its own, but he's confident he will be ready for training camp.
Manning is expected to miss the OTAs and mini-camps.
"You know, I think I could be safe to say I should be 100 percent by training camp," Manning said Tuesday, via the NY Daily News. "I would hope so. I would think for sure I'd be ready to go for training camp."
Manning was wearing a walking boot on his left foot and was asked why he waited so long after the season to undergo the procedure.
"We just felt this was the safest bet to go ahead and do the scope at this point, rather than waiting and seeing how it felt, going through OTAs and mini-camp," he said. "Then all of a sudden its June or July and then you might be missing training camp. We felt this was the safest bet. This will insure that I'm back 100 percent by training camp."
The New York Giants have agreed upon a one-year deal with Josh Freeman.
Freeman will compete for the No. 2 quarterback job with Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib.
Eli Manning underwent surgery on his ankle last week.
Freeman, 26, a first-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2009, started 56 games for the team. He enjoyed his best season in 2010, when he started 16 games and threw for 3,451 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions.
He has struggled since, throwing 43 interceptions over the past four seasons.
The New York Giants are expected to work out Josh Freeman next week.
The Giants have had backup quarterbacks such as Curtis Painter and David Carr in recent seasons, so Freeman would be an upgrade.

Eli Manning will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle.
Manning is expected to be able to run again in approximately six weeks.
Manning sprained his ankle in the final game of the 2013 season against the Redskins and has spent the offseason rehabbing it.
"I went through the recovery and rehab after suffering the sprain," Manning said in the release. "I was still experiencing some discomfort as I began my normal offseason preparation, and after consultation, we felt the right thing was to have Dr. Anderson clean out the ankle."
The Tennessee Titans will release Chris Johnson.
Johnson averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 2013, the worst mark of his career.
The Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and New York Giants could pursue Johnson, according to reports.
The New York Giants have signed Robert Ayers on a two-year, $4 million contract.
The deal includes $1.75 million in guaranteed money and is loaded with incentives, according to the source.
Ayers was the 18th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, but had just 12 sacks in five seasons with the Denver Broncos.
Ayers played outside linebacker when the Broncos ran a 3-4 defensive scheme under Josh McDaniels and defensive end in 4-3 alignments.
