Jim Schwartz Considered Favorite For Giants' Head Coaching Job

Dec 31, 2017 10:38 AM

Jim Schwartz is considered the favorite to become the next head coach of the New York Giants.

The Giants fired Ben McAdoo after Week 13.

Schwartz is expected to interview next week while the Philadelphia Eagles are on a bye.

John Mara said the team wants to hire an experienced coach, and Schwartz would qualify. Schwartz was head coach of the Detroit Lions for five seasons.

In two seasons in Philadelphia, Schwartz has made significant strides with the Eagles' defense.

Brandon Marshall Wants To Return To Giants

Dec 29, 2017 9:31 AM

Brandon Marshall would like to return to the New York Giants next season at the age of 33.

Marshall missed the final 11 games of the season due to ankle surgery.

Marshall has continued to train and rehab at the Giants' facility.

"I'm all-in on football. I've rebuilt my body. I think I'm two great years away from -- and I'll say it, I want to be a Hall of Famer, and I think I got two great years to go to be mentioned with some of the greats," Marshall said. "I'm not just playing this game just to be a guy; I want to be remembered for the product that I put out on the field.

"So these last few years have been tough, last year with the Jets, this year with the Giants. But I'm hopeful that the next couple years for me will be some amazing years and some of my best work."

Marshall could earn up to $5.5 million, but he produced just 18 catches for 154 yards in five games before suffering the injury and needing surgery.

Marshall understands the reality of the situation.

"You know how it is, you get to the plus side of 30, a production slip, you get injured, the business side of it, history says that you're going to get cut or they are going to ask you to take a pay cut," he said. "That's the business side of it, that's history. So I'm prepared for that. I've had a lot of change in my life, but one of the reasons why I came to this organization was for stability and also not to be an environment that we created this year, right? So I was looking for more stability, but I'm built for this and I'll learn from it."

Giants Hire Dave Gettleman As General Manager

Dec 28, 2017 6:15 PM

The New York Giants have hired Dave Gettleman as general manager.

Gettleman spent the past four seasons as GM of the Carolina Panthers after 15 years with the Giants.

The Giants fired general manager Jerry Reese and coach Ben McAdoo on Dec. 4.

Interim general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross and ESPN's Louis Riddick were the others to speak with Giants ownership about the opening.

"Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a General Manager and a proven track record," president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a statement. "Dave's experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here. Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organization in how we draft and acquire players through free agency."

Infographic: Five Teams Rank In Top-10 In Offense, Defense DVOA

Dec 13, 2017 12:29 PM

The NFL has five teams ranking in the top-10 in DVOA on both Offense and Defense after Week 14. In an indication of how much turnover there's been in parts of the NFL, none of those five teams (Rams, Eagles, Vikings, Saints and Chargers) made the playoffs in 2016.

The Chiefs, Cowboys, Steelers, Falcons and Patriots also rank in the top-10 on offense, while the Jaguars, Broncos, Panthers, Ravens and Cardinals rank in the top-10 on defense.

The Seahawks, who have consistently been one of the NFL's top teams in DVOA during the Russell Wilson era, are just outside the top-10 in both categories.

Geno Smith Doesn't Understand Why He Won't Start For Giants

Dec 7, 2017 8:50 AM

Geno Smith doesn't know why he won't be the starting quarterback for the New York Giants this weekend.

After firing Ben McAdoo and Jerry Reese, the Giants are going back to Eli Manning in Week 14.

Starting for the first time since 2014 this past Sunday, Smith completed 21-of-34 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown and also fumbled twice in a loss to the Oakland Raiders.

"Any competitor wouldn't be [happy] to be put in that situation where you get a chance to play and then you are being pulled." Smith said. "But it's not because you played bad. So it is, you are trying to figure out why. You have to understand things happen in this business and you got to roll with it."
