Netflix will broadcast the NFL's first-ever regular-season game played in Australia, airing the San Francisco 49ers against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Sept. 10, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic. Kickoff is set for 8:35 p.m. ET at Melbourne Cricket Ground, the largest stadium in Australia. NBC is expected to handle production.

The NFL and Netflix declined to comment.

The Week 1 matchup extends Netflix's existing broadcast relationship with the league, which has featured two Christmas Day games over the past two seasons. That arrangement continues in December 2026, with Fox airing a third Christmas game in prime time.

Netflix has been rapidly building its live sports portfolio. In March, the platform exclusively aired the MLB season opener between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. Upcoming broadcasts include the Home Run Derby on July 14, the Field of Dreams game on Aug. 13, and the Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031.

The Australia contest is one of nine international regular-season games scheduled for 2026. The NFL will make its debut in two new cities: Paris, featuring the New Orleans Saints, and Rio de Janeiro, hosting the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys. Additional games are planned for Mexico City, Madrid, Munich and three London venues. Full team pairings will be revealed during the league's schedule release, expected Wednesday or Thursday.

The Netflix game in Australia will require a subscription to access nationally, though local markets will receive the game on over-the-air television, consistent with standard NFL broadcast protocol. The league has noted that 87 percent of its game inventory remains available through traditional broadcast outlets.
