Vikings GM: Sometimes You Have To Take Swings For Great Players

Apr 26, 2024 8:51 AM

The Minnesota Vikings traded up twice on Thursday night to draft quarterback J.J. McCarthy and edge rusher Dallas Turner.

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said the team didn't want to look back and feel they missed out on something.

Minnesota moved up from No. 11 to No. 10 for McCarthy and from No. 23 to No. 17 to take Turner.

"You know, we're always talking about minimizing regret," Adofo-Mensah said. "If you're sitting on your couch one day, and you're like, 'That extra fifth [-round pick] or whatever it was, and you could have had a chance at a guy you think could be special,' you're never going to care about that fifth-round pick. And there's ways of getting it back. Obviously, I'm a spreadsheet guy myself, but sometimes, you've got to step out from there, take your Clark Kent glasses off, have a championship mindset and swing for a great player."

Chargers Received Trade Calls On Justin Herbert From Pats, Vikings

Apr 26, 2024 12:20 AM

The Los Angeles Chargers received trade inquiries on Justin Herbert from the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz confirmed Thursday that he fielded inquiries about Herbert but did not specify which teams contacted him, adding "they were quickly shot down."

"Justin who?" Hortiz said with a smile. "No. No, at the combine I had some people ask me would we consider it, and they were quickly shot down. No, that is never an option."

The Chargers would have had to take on a $63.5 million salary cap charge for 2024 if they traded Herbert. The Chargers signed Herbert last July to a five-year, $262.5 million extension that included $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees.

New England selected Drake Maye at No. 3, while the Vikings picked J.J. McCarthy at No. 10.

Rick Spielman: Vikings Will Have To 'Overpay' To Draft QB

Apr 9, 2024 8:30 AM

The Minnesota Vikings have the No. 11 and No. 23 overall picks in this month's NFL Draft, but they won't be in position to draft a potential franchise-changing quarterback.

Rick Spielman, the team's former general manager and current CBS analyst, believes the Vikings would have to part ways with a huge haul in order to take a quarterback like J.J. McCarthy.

"I heard a lot of things that Minnesota thought he had an excellent pro day up there and fits exactly what Kevin O'Connell wants to do from an offensive standpoint," Spielman said on the 'With the First Pick" podcast. "But they're just not gonna get it with the two first-round picks.

"They're gonna have to throw in their first-round pick in 2025, plus some more draft capital, to do what they have to do to go up and get it."

Sam Darnold is currently the Vikings starting quarterback.

Vikings Suspend OC Wes Phillips After DWI Charge

Apr 3, 2024 10:16 AM

The Minnesota Vikings have suspended offensive coordinator Wes Phillips for three weeks without pay following the legal resolution of a 2023 traffic stop in Minneapolis, according to a report.

His suspension began Tuesday and will conclude April 22.

Phillips was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge last December, according to Hennepin County records.

Less than 24 hours after being arrested, Phillips boarded a plane with the rest of the Vikings ahead of the team's Dec. 10 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Vikings Want To Contend Amid Quarterback Change

Mar 26, 2024 8:24 AM

The Minnesota Vikings are undergoing a change at quarterback this offseason, but they still hope to be in playoff contention in 2024.

Vikings owner/president Mark Wilf made clear that his family still thinks the team should build for the future while winning in the present. He acknowledged that injuries played a role in last season's record but said that his family is "not going to rest on that."

"We want to win every single game and every step along the way," Wilf said. "So how that falls, what will happen on the field, we'll see. It's important our fans to know that that's always our commitment and that's how we approach it. At the same time, we believe the way we're building this is going to get to sustained success. We're, like our fans, not pleased with our record last year. We want to be competing for playoffs, championships, division titles and Super Bowl championships, all of the above."

Wilf added that the Vikings made Kirk Cousins a "serious offer" to remain with the team. Minnesota replaced Cousins with free agent Sam Darnold and are hoping to draft their quarterback of the future next month.

Asked what made him believe the Vikings could win and compete for a playoff spot amid that transition, Wilf said: "I think it can happen. I believe it can happen. I believe it has happened in other organizations as well, and that's what we think can happen."

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah: Narrative On RBs Has Gone A Little Too Far

Mar 22, 2024 8:24 AM

The Minnesota Vikings appear to have changed their approach to the running back position.

A year after cutting Dalvin Cook, the Vikings signed Aaron Jones in free agency to bolster the position this month.

"We get the conversation about running backs and age and different things like that," general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said. "Maybe that dynamic has gone a little too far to the other side, and teams are realizing that there are still really good players at their value. It's a position where we can really upgrade performance pretty efficiently. We're excited to have him."

Jones landed a one-year, $7 million deal with Minnesota.
