Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Saturday that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on track to participate in the team's upcoming voluntary offseason workouts, less than a month before the program begins. Mahomes underwent surgery in December to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.

The Chiefs open their first three OTA sessions May 26-28. Reid described Mahomes as capable of handling activity within the non-contact structure of the early offseason program.

"He is in a good position to be able to do some things," Reid said. "Phase 2, remember, there's no contact and there's no offense versus defense. It's Phase 3 that you get into that. He's in a position where he can do everything, I think."

Mahomes has spent most days since his December procedure working inside the Chiefs' training facility. Athletic trainer Julie Frymyer, who has supported his recovery from previous injuries throughout his nine-year career, has guided much of his rehabilitation.

In late March, Mahomes posted a short video on Instagram showing himself executing a five-step dropback before completing what appeared to be an intermediate throw. Reid confirmed the quarterback has continued to build on that progress.

"I know he's doing a lot of stuff right now," Reid said. "He is throwing the ball. He does it on his own."
