The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured Patrick Mahomes' contract, generating critical salary cap space ahead of the 2026 season, according to ESPN and multiple reports. The move marks the fourth consecutive year the organization has reworked the star quarterback's deal.

The restructuring, first reported Wednesday by Over the Cap, converts $54.45 million of Mahomes' 2026 salary into a signing bonus and reduces his cap figure to $34.65 million. The adjustment creates $43.65 million in cap relief for a franchise that entered the offseason more than $57 million over the limit.

Mahomes originally carried a $78.2 million cap charge for 2026. Under the revised terms, he will count an additional $11 million against Kansas City's cap in each of the next four seasons, pushing his 2027 cap number to $85 million, according to Over the Cap.

The Chiefs missed the playoffs in 2025 after reaching the Super Bowl in each of the previous three seasons. Kansas City must comply with the NFL's salary cap before the new league year begins March 11, requiring further financial adjustments beyond Mahomes' restructure.

Defensive lineman Chris Jones, who carries a nearly $45 million cap hit, is another candidate for a restructured agreement. Offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor, who has one year remaining on his four-year, $80 million contract, could face release. Veterans Mike Danna, Drue Tranquill, and Noah Gray are also potential cap casualties.

Mahomes signed his original 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, the richest deal in North American team sports history at the time. The two-time league MVP underwent surgery in mid-December to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee and stated last month he intends to play in Kansas City's 2026 season opener.
