Super Bowl Gatorade Shower Began In SB 21
The Gatorade bath made its Super Bowl debut with the 1986 New York Giants in Super Bowl 21. Bill Parcells had been awash in Gatorade dumped on him by his players after victories since 1984. Parcells triumphantly walked off the field of the Rose Bowl awash in sweet and sticky, Orange-colored Gatorade following Big Blue’s 39-20 win over the Broncos. In all, the Tuna got hit with 17 Gatorade showers during that championship season.
In the past 35 years, the Gatorade bath has become a post-game staple, along with that trip to Disney World and the Lombardi Trophy presentations. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Patriots coach Bill Belichick stayed dry after his team won Super Bowls 36, 38 and 51. Two of those games (Super Bowl 36 and 51) were decided on the game’s final play.
Super Bowl 38 ended with a kickoff. Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning field goal left 2 seconds remaining on the clock. In all 3 games, Belichick’s players were in no position to be concerned with preparing a Gatorade dump.
Baltimore coach Jim Harbaugh also avoided the rain after the Ravens beat the 49ers in Super Bowl 47.
