If the Browns aren't able to sign D'Qwell Jackson to a long-term contract, they will use their franchise tag on the linebacker, according to a source.
The franchise salary for linebackers is expected to be $8.8 million for the 2012 season. Cleveland has until March 5 to use their franchise tag.
"We're looking for a long-term deal and that's what both parties would like to accomplish before free agency starts on Mar. 13," said Jackson's agent, Brian Mackler.
Mackler characterized the talks as going "Ok."
