Alex Smith didn't meet with the media until an hour after Sunday night's loss to the Eagles. Smith spent much of that time meeting with Mike Singletary. During the four quarter after Smith threw his third consecutive interception, Singletary was intent on benching Smith and informed the quarterback of his desires. David Carr had been told he was coming in and was on the phone with offensive coordinator Mike Johnson. In the end Smith told Singletary he wanted to finish and said that taking him out wouldn't help the team. His teammates seemed to agree. Vernon Davis was obviously in his corner and so was Frank Gore. "I didn't want David to come in," Gore said. And he didn't mean it as a slam on Carr. "I want the best for Alex. I feel I didn't go help in the running game."
