Watching every preseason game over the past few days, here are a few meaningful observations for each team. Raiders Michael Bush looks like the clear starter at running back. Darrius Heyward-Bey has had good OTA?s but poor showing in preseason opener. We didn?t get to see much of the other WR?s Louis Murphy and Chaz Schilens due to lack of passes completed? Jason Campbell looked like? Jason Campbell= Nothing flashy, nothing great. Cowboys The Dallas defense looks VERY strong ? LOTS of depth. Marion Barber is the starter but for how long? He averaged 3 yds/carry? Felix Jones? fumble didn?t help any thinking that he will take more carries than last year. Explosive offense and dominant defense?NO Kardashian jinx here -WR Miles Austin looked great and poised to have another big year with two big catches. Ravens I expect a HUGE year offensively for Baltimore. Defensively, the first team looked sharp sacking Matt Moore and causing a fumble (did not recover). Not to mention, halfway through the season they?ll get Pro-bowl safety Ed Reed back? WR Mark Clayton had a great game with a couple of receptions including a nice 30+yd touchdown grab from Joe Flacco. Very important for him seeing as he is in a fight for the 3rd WR spot with free agent signing Donte Stallworth. Rookie TE Ed Dickson also looked great with the 2nd team. Former TE & current GM Ozzie Newsome wants a top receiving TE in his offense and starter Todd Heap could be on thin ice after Dickson?s explosive burst off the line in this game. Panthers Matt Moore is still very raw and has a lot to learn about the QB position. WR2 is a big battle between 2010 2nd round pick Brandon Lafell & underperforming 2007 2nd round pick Dwayne Jarrett. Jimmy Clausen looked decent with the 2nd team given that it was his first NFL game. Lots of poise for a rookie- expect him to be the starting QB by next year at the latest. That being said, I?d expect Carolina to be picking between 10-13 next season at the lowest. Patriots Wes Welker is ahead of schedule to return and I can clearly see why? watching Julian Edelmen with the 2nd team I?d be worried about my job as well. Benjarvus Green-Ellis the starter?? Apparently so, even when Laurence Maroney was the leading tailback last year- but Maroney looked great this game scoring 2 TD?s- stand by to see what happens here. Tom Brady looked strong and looked in pre-injury form. Alge Crumpler got the starting nod and rookie TE Aaron Hernandez played with the 2nd team. The Patriots look poised to return to the postseason. Redskins How much better does the Redskins offense look with Donovan McNabb at the helm? Complete turnaround. Devin Thomas has a make or break camp ahead. As color commentator Joe Theismann pointed out, dropping passes will not bode well for him as he could potentially find himself without a job as WR Anthony Armstrong has been impressing coaches throughout training camp. Clinton Portis started at tailback and looked good- but this is Mike Shanahan and he has no qualms about switching up running backs at ANY time during the season. Bills Buffalo?s woes look like they will continue this season. Trent Edwards threw another boneheaded pick in this game, which is the same thing that plagued him last year. Edwards and WR Lee Evans look COMPLETELY out of synch. Fred Jackson taking first team snaps?for now. CJ Spiller is noticeably the better talent but didn?t start. I don?t expect Jackson, even with his service to the team the past two seasons, to hold on to the job when things go south. Spiller will take first team snaps the rest of the preseason due to injuries to Jackson as well as Marshawn Lynch. 49ers The 49ers don?t look much improved, in fact they look worse. DT Aubrayo Franklin?s holdout is hurting the defense so badly that, without him, you can look for the 49ers to start their offseason with the majority of the NFL. Rookie O linemen look decent for a first start? only two mental mistakes. RB depth is now seriously in question due to Glen Coffee retiring unexpectedly. Michael Robinson is NOT the answer? Anthony Dixon looked pretty good but let?s see what he can do against 1st team defenses. Colts Joseph Addai did well to cement himself as the starter. Austin Collie looked great which spells bad news for former 1st-round pick Anthony Gonzalez. LOVE the ?new? uniforms!! Eagles Brent Celek looks poised to be the next Dallas Clark ? Kevin Kolb?s blatantly obvious favorite connection?not to mention they?re roommates. Overall, this offense looks explosive and will go as far as Kolb can go. Definitely a lot of talent here on the offensive & defensive sides of the ball. Jaguars I feel bad for Jacksonville fans. It almost reminds me of the movie ?Major League? where ownership did all they could to NOT acquire talent in the offseason in order to move to sunny Los Angeles? Perhaps they?ll let MJD actually run the ball next game! - Especially after that abysmal passing performance. It?s going to be a long season and I?d expect Jax to be drafting in the top 10 again in 2011 as the entire offense looked out of synch. Jets If there were any doubters, Shonn Greene is the real deal. LaDanian Tomlinson on the other hand, looks lost and out of place in the running game and most pass plays. One bad pick is the only thing Mark Sanchez did wrong. Perhaps the hype is legit? And who is this imposter wearing a #17 Edwards jersey??! WR Braylon Edwards looked great making tough catches (what?s with the Kimbo Slice beard?)?a far cry from the past few seasons. SB XLII MVP Santonio Holmes played mostly with the 2nd team offense- how far the mighty have fallen. Still had a good game though. Giants The NY Giants are in for a long season? The running game definitely didn?t look like their championship running game of 2007. RB Ahmad Bradshaw looked great and explosive, whereas RB Brandon Jacobs stumbled into teammates with the ball (including a gruesome play where he was in the wrong position and nearly got QB Eli Manning killed!) The Giants defense was picked apart by Mark Sanchez and the Jets running game for the most part. 1st round pick DE Jason Pierre-Paul played with the 2nd team defense and looked lost- not a good sign. This is supposed to be notes about the 1st teams but I?d be foolish to believe that after WR Victor Cruz?s 3TD performance (one of which a highlight reel one handed grab), he wouldn?t be with the first team next week. The undrafted rookie can flat out ball! Could be a star in the making here? Titans Vince Young looked poised and played VERY well on the first drive. He threw a pick that was more WR Justin Gage?s bad route running than Young?s throw. Offense moved the ball very easily and looked in rhythm. Defense was able to shut down a mediocre Seattle offense. Kenny Britt not starting??! Seahawks Surprisingly RB Julius Jones started this game. Jones didn?t run the ball well and dropped an easy check down pass?sound like last year? RB Justin Forsett is someone that new head coach Pete Carroll is familiar with out of the Pac-10 ? Matt Hasselbeck is no longer a good NFL QB and proved that once again in this game going an ugly 4-for-10. If he continues to struggle, I wouldn?t be surprised to see Charlie Whitehurst become the starter- Whitehurst had a GREAT game and looked phenomenal. When Tennessee pulled their major players, Seattle?s defense began to play well ? if only they could play against practice squads all year. Texans Arian Foster looked the part of a starting RB for the Texans, whereas former starting RB Steve Slaton looked just as much the backup? Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson look in mid-season form connecting on a 40+yard TD bomb. Never got a chance to see the new look secondary seeing as Houston?s pass rush blasted through Arizona?s O-line on a number of occasions! Cardinals After losing two Pro Bowlers from their 2009 defense (and then adding two former Pro Bowlers), Arizona doesn?t look like it?s lost a thing- still very aggressive and emotional. Any defense would get burned by Schaub to Johnson? QB Matt Leinart did nothing to shake his doubters this game as he played miserably (don?t let the stat sheet fool you). Missed passes downfield (one leading Larry Fitzgerald over the middle leading to a vicious hit), and he even fumbled a handoff. Derek Anderson, this is your job to win ?RB Tim Hightower got the starting nod due to Beanie Wells? bruised ribs. This is a legit timeshare and nothing in this game proved anything otherwise. Dolphins QB Chad Henne started but it rained heavily in 1st quarter so passing game was sloppy- especially the couple drops by WR Brandon Marshall?Miami is starting a rookie RG John Jerry this year and did so in this game- He played decently with the 1st team given how well RB?s Ronnie Brown & Ricky Williams ran his way- which, from this game, looks to be a legitimate 50-50 RB time share.... WR Brian Hartline got the start over Davonne Bess? Starting two rookies on defense once again this year (2009 CB?s Sean Smith and Vontae Davis- 2010 LB?s Jarred Odrick and Koa Misi) but I?d expect this defense to be VERY STOUT and definitely exemplified that here. Buccaneers In a wide open WR battle, Maurice Stovall and rookie Mike Williams (who had a nice catch along the sidelines) got the start over the hyped rookie WR Arrellious Benn. WR Sammie Stroughter had a nice TD grab going against a very good Miami CB Sean Smith? RB Cadillac Williams started and ran as decently as you can in this offense? RB Derrick Ward, amidst rumors that he will be cut, did nothing to squash those talks ? Ward ran with the Bucs 1st and 2nd teams but looked HORRIBLE fumbling twice and unable to muster any yardage on his carries. Chargers LaDanian who?? - rookie RB Ryan Matthews looked strong and powerful ? but most of his yards came against backups. Still, he looked pretty good?Vincent Jackson played where?? - WR Legedu Naanee started and had a big game taking advantage of the opportunity with a nice TD reception? QB Phillip Rivers looked every bit as good as he did without these former Charger superstars mentioned earlier ? San Diego?s defense did well without two starters (LB Shawn Merriman & DE Larry English) and looked as good as the San Diego cheerleaders when playing against the run and tightened up overall in the red zone. Bears Chicago?s defense looked pretty good against a high-powered San Diego offense?RB Matt Forte started with the 1st team but once again didn?t get any running lanes. Shame? Newly signed RB Chester Taylor didn?t do himself any favors to compete for the starting job by fumbling but otherwise had a solid game? QB Jay Cutler played only one series and led the 1st team offense on a scoring drive (FG)? both of Cutler?s completions were to WR Johnny Knox ? both were impressive. WR Devin Aromashodu is third on the depth chart as of right now but had a huge game? Packers RB Ryan Grant turned the ball over on the first offensive play and didn?t do much except end up with a minor jaw injury ? his replacement Brandon Jackson also fumbled? As expected, QB Aaron Rodgers looked every bit the role as the top ranked QB in the NFL going 10-for-10 on the first two series?WR Greg Jennings had an outstanding game which is good news for Packer fans after his down year last year?TE Jermichael Finley looked good as did WR Donald Driver ? maybe the deepest receiving corp in the NFL ? I honestly don?t know how anyone can stop this offense?LB Clay Matthews & CB Al Harris did not play and the defense looked horrible ? if the Browns (yes, the Browns) are moving the ball on you, that?s raise for concern? Browns I swore I was watching 1980?s highlights and #17 was Brian Sipe! But no- QB Jake Delhomme looked amazing against one of the NFL?s top defenses- QB Seneca Wallace came in after one series and continued this success firing a TD strike to WR Brian Robiskie? WR Mohamed Massaquoi looked VERY good, even catching a slant on fourth down - the 2nd year wideout looks like he may have a breakout year? RB Jerome Harrison played well as the starter and scored a TD - RB Peyton Hillis took some reps as well? A surprise, TE Evan Moore, caught a couple passes and looked like a legitimate NFL rock catcher as he battles with former NE TE Benjamin Watson who caught a TD pass? Vikings Watching the Vikings backups on offense against the Rams made me feel like I was watching the XFL ? QB Tavaris Jackson ?started? and AP didn?t play, but things have quickly and expectedly changed. Rams I would rather clean my stove than watch the Rams play? QB AJ Feely started and played like, well, AJ Feely? QB Sam Bradford came in with the first team and played decently for a rookie QB ? even if he was staring down his receivers. The offense was at least able to get first downs with Bradford in the game ? he could be the real deal?RB Steven Jackson didn?t play thus Chris Ogbannaya started in his place but didn?t play well behind a terrible O-line? WR Leron Robinson got the start along with Donnie Avery but didn?t get many reps due to the Quarterback play. Steelers QB ?Windup? Byron Leftwich started with the first team and the offense couldn?t do much of anything with Windup at the helm? RB Rashard Mendenhall wasn?t able to generate much offense and he fumbled the ball on what would have been a 10+ yard run. The offense will be centered toward him until Ben Roethlisberger returns so Steelers fans better pray that it?s just preseason rust? New starting WR Mike Wallace was the main target the few times they looked at the wideouts? this team looked out of synch without Big Ben against the Lions 1st team. Lions Rookie RB Jahvid Best got the start for an injured Kevin Smith and looked great running the ball but tipped a pass causing an interception?WR?s Calvin ?Megatron? Johnson looks to have fully bounced back after an injury-plagued 2009 (caught a few passes and a TD grab) & Nate Burleson caught passes and looked decent as the other WR?Lions defense was able to generate a pretty good pass rush against the Steelers starting offensive line? Overall, this team is certainly improved and I can see them scoring points & winning games this year ? just not many in their division. Broncos It?s hard to say who the ?#1? option will be at WR but Brandon Lloyd looked like the guy who will step up as he was targeted slightly more by QB Kyle Orton ?WR Eddie Royal and WR Jabar Gaffney also started and each had good games as well (Royal had a TD grab and Gaffney was targeted often) ?3 top RB?s did not play so no key as to what the situation is here?TE Daniel Graham started but didn?t do much of anything expect block (was targeted once in the red zone) -? Surprisingly both offensive & defensive 1st teams looked pretty good but the defense definitely benefited from Cincinnati's lack of precision Bengals RB Cedric Benson started and looked just as good as last year??Batman & Robin? started but T.O. was targeted heavily, so much so the Cincinnati announcers couldn?t figure out who was who (kept calling T.O., Ochocinco!)? could be more of a passing offense this year? TE Jermaine Gresham looked decent as a receiving option, catching a few passes, but needs to learn how to block?
