How To Improve: Bears Offensive Line
The problem of the Chicago offensive line is that most of their abilities contrast what Mike Martz likes to do on offense, which is throw the ball.
2011 Season Preview: Chicago Bears
The Bears have a brutal opening three games and their ability to weather that storm will go a long ways in determining how they followup their appearance in the NFC Championship Game.
Chicago Bears Season Preview 2010
There?s enough talent to contend, and if the lines hold up these Bears are a legit playoff contender and 10-11 win team. But this has not been a top-half defense in years now, which means they'll have to outscore many teams.
Grading The Deal: Bears Add Claws To Defense
A year after making a splash on offense, the Bears made a defensive one by signing Julius Peppers on Friday.
Jay Cutler, Man Alone
Aside from his horrifying interception stats, Jay Cutler hasn?t been an issue for the Bears. Here's why.
Buyer's Remorse
The Bears are 1-4 over their last five games, with Jay Cutler throwing 12 interceptions in the span.
Bears Won't Miss A Beat Without Urlacher
No one player is going to fill the void left behind by Brian Urlacher, but the Bears have the personnel to maintain a strong defensive unit.
2009 Season Preview: Chicago Bears
Fans in Chicago are very excited about Jay Cutler, but a weak group of receivers and an aging, often-injured, defense will keep the Bears from the NFC North title.
Grading The Deal: Chicago Acquires Cutler
Giving up two first round picks for Jay Cutler is a heavy price for the Bears, but he has the potential of joining Steve Young and Brett Favre as future HOF QBs that were dealt young.
Auditing The Chicago Bears 2008 Season
The Bears defense fell backwards towards the middle of the pack in 2008, especially against long passing plays and their offense clearly wasn't equipped at receiver to carry a bigger load.
The Difference Between 2-0 And 1-1 For Chicago
Two Greg Olsen fumbles, Jonathan Stewart, and the bad karma that followed a Lance Briggs' hit were more than enough to allow the Bears to squander a 17-3 third quarter lead in Carolina.
Guarded Optimism Following Opening Week Win
The Bears pulled off a compelling upset at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week One's Sunday night match-up, and although there is promise in many parts of Lovie Smith's club, the optimism must be guarded.
Controversey Over, Problems Begin
Going by Lovie Smith?s best year with the Bears, the quick strike was a big reason why in 2006 Chicago reached Super Bowl XLI, so why are they going with Kyle Orton?
2008 Season Preview: Chicago Bears
Much like their recent Chicago hoops brethren, a lot of individual talent doesn?t form a great or often even a competitive team.
Bears Pre-Draft Summit
Most Chicago fans agree that both Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman belong on the hot seat this fall.
2007 Season Preview: Chicago Bears
The Bears are still the best overall team in the NFC North and are fully capable of returning to the Super Bowl if the offensive skill positions play well. But their depth is largely gone, their schedule significantly tougher-looking, and the sum of their losses greatly outweighs their potential gains.
MVP Carried Bears In Arizona Win
After their 24-23 win over Arizona, I was flabbergasted. I went from an emotional low (the entire game) to an emotional high (Hester?s punt return). I had no idea whether to cry for joy because my Bears won or to cry because my Bears were exposed like they were against the Carolina Panthers last year? After pondering my thoughts, I found the Bears are and will only be Super Bowl contenders because of the NFL?s MVP, Brian Urlacher.
2006 NFL Team Preview: Chicago Bears
All starters return from division champion season. Griese provides a major upgrade at backup QB, and with starter Rex Grossman?s injury history (he?s played 7 games in 3 seasons), that?s a necessity. Strong depth at RB, OL, and DL. Very favorable early schedule, and the easiest overall schedule.
NFL Draft Dissection 2006 ? Chicago Bears
On a team with that pays such attention to their defense you?d definitely expect Chicago to address some problems at cornerback. They did that in part by signing Ricky Manning Jr. but he really isn?t a starter on a great secondary, so that could be looked at in the first day. While the linebacker core is strong on the surface it lacks depth making it a secondary concern, or in other words, something to be addressed in rounds 2-4.
On Top Of The Bottom
A well known sports talk show host in Chicago likes to refer to the first place team in the NFC North as the ?tallest midget.? That midget?s name is the Chicago Bears. At 4-3 in the division, they are not just a tall midget, they are a giant.
Quarter-Back To Reality
For Chicago Bears rookie QB Kyle Orton, five is the loneliest number. That five represents the number of Orton completions to the Cincinnati Bengals defense on Sunday afternoon during a 24-7 loss.
Showdown Coming to Chi-town
This Sunday?s matchup between the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals will prove to be one of the games of the week. As of now, it?s maybe the NFL?s best offense (Bengals) vs. maybe the NFL?s best defense (Bears). There should be no shortage of highlights on both sides of the ball in this one.
Ups And Downs In The Capital
For the first time in recent memory, there is hope beaming out of Halas Hall. However, after a successful preseason on offense that looked like the Bears had Sid Luckman under center with Gale Sayers and Walter Payton split in the backfield, the Bears reverted back to their scoring methods from the previous season.
Bears Get No Respect
The widespread skepticism surrounding the Bears this season is similar to the general consensus about the team before the 2001 season. Even the local papers were saying the Bears would maybe win three games that season.
Defense To Be Strength Of Team
Ranking last in the NFL in most offensive categories in 2004, the Bears relied on their defense to keep them in every contest. Now it?s 2005, and with Jerry Azumah slated to be back in a few weeks from an injury in training camp, the defense will be at full strength.
Bears Need Benson Now More Than Ever
Chad Hutchinson will take over the reigns of an offense that many think will stumble, bumble, and crumble without their unproven leader. One thing is for sure, and that is a great running attack can offset some troubles that are in the passing game. Cedric Benson, come on down!
Down, But Definitely Not Out
QB Rex Grossman may be out, however, the Bears offense will not rely sole on the quarterback. A bigger loss would be to lose Urlacher or Mike Brown, the two anchors of the defense. Their absence would have a huge ripple effect on the entire defense that would be devastating.
Assessing The Bears: Quarterback
Will Grossman likely to be out for all of next season, the Bears have four backup QB's in Hutchinson, Orton, Kittner and Dinwiddie.
Windy City Revival
Given the Bears futility the past, oh, decade or so, it would be easy to pencil in another losing record and another year of ?landing next year?s top draft pick?. Many analysts and ?professionals? are doing exactly that. However, past performance doesn?t always guarantee future results, to borrow a phrase from the financial services world.
Bears Have Offensive Off-Season
Overall, the Bears did a fine job this off-season to remake a pathetic offense. With the additions and subtractions made, this Bears offense shouldn’t be quite so, well, offensive.
