Last season, Patrick Mahomes became the first player in more than two decades to win regular season NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season.

With Lamar Jackson set to win regular season NFL MVP, but having been eliminated from the playoffs, another Super Bowl will come and go without a player winning both awards in the same season. 

There are seven players in NFL history who have won regular season MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season:

• 1966: Bart Starr, Packers

• 1978: Terry Bradshaw, Steelers

• 1989: Joe Montana, 49ers

• 1993: Emmitt Smith, Cowboys

• 1994: Steve Young, 49ers

• 1999: Kurt Warner, Rams

• 2022: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

An additional four players won MVP in the regular season and the Super Bowl, but were not named MVP for the game.

• 1982: Mark Moseley, Washington

• 1986: Lawrence Taylor, Giants

• 1996: Brett Favre, Packers

• 1998: Terrell Davis, Broncos

In the NBA, 10 separate players have won regular season MVP and Finals MVP in the same season with Michael Jordan accomplishing it four times.
