Kaeding Signs New Six Year Extension

Oct 23, 2014 4:51 AM

San Diego Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith continues to solidify the long-term strength of the team?s roster. Today Smith and the Chargers signed kicker Nate Kaeding to a new six-year contract extension that runs through the 2012 season. The young kicker?s previous contract was due to expire following this season, which would have made him a restricted free agent. ?Nate is a very talented player who has been very productive for us in his young career,? Smith said. ?This extension adds to our commitment to solidify what we believe is an outstanding special teams unit for years to come.? Last year the team signed Kaeding?s special teams partner, punter Mike Scifres, to an extension through the 2011 season. Kaeding is in the midst of a perfect season. He has hit all six of his field goal attempts and all seven of his PAT attempts. Since being drafted in the third round in ?04, he has been successful on 85.5 percent of his field goal attempts, hitting 47 of 55 kicks. He has made his last 13 field goals in a row and has a string of 78 consecutive PATs. The team record is 87 straight PATs set by Rolf Benirschke in 1983-86. ?It?s exciting,? Kaeding said. ?It happened pretty fast. We had the bye week, so it was important to get it through and get it done before the ball started flying. I was very happy with the speed (of negotiations) and the end result. It gives you the kind of security you look for, especially being here in this organization with these guys that I came in with. I couldn?t ask for anything better. ?I really felt confident coming into last year. I put together a really good year. I was hitting the ball as well as I ever have during this past offseason. It?s carried over into this season. I?m looking forward to doing it for 14 more weeks and, with this team, continuing it into the playoffs.

Fisher: Volek Lied To Him

Oct 23, 2014 4:51 AM

Coach Jeff Fisher lashed out at critics of the Titans' dealings with Billy Volek, saying Wednesday that Volek lied to him and never took advantage of the opportunity to be the starter. The Titans finally traded Volek on Tuesday to the Chargers for a sixth-round draft pick that could become a fifth-rounder depending on playing time. Fisher said Volek asked to be traded the day the Titans signed Kerry Collins late last month.

Chargers Trade For Volek

Oct 23, 2014 4:51 AM

The San Diego Chargers acquired veteran quarterback Billy Volek in a trade from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2007 sixth-round draft choice. The draft choice could become a fifth-round choice if Volek participates in 50% of the team?s total offensive plays in ?06. ?We?re excited to add Billy Volek to strengthen our quarterback position,? said General Manager A.J. Smith. ?We?re always exploring ways to upgrade the talent on the Chargers. Billy brings talent and experience, and adds depth at that very critical position.? Volek, currently in his seventh NFL season, has started 10 games over the past three seasons. In those 10 starts, the 30-year old has thrown for 2,789 yards, the most passing yards by any quarterback in his first 10 starts dating back to 1970. In 24 regular-season games played, Volek has completed 312 of 517 pass attempts (.603) for 3,505 yards, 26 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 86.9. He has not seen regular-season action thus far in ?06.

ACLU Accuses San Diego County Of Smear Campaign Against Foley

Jul 22, 2014 12:31 AM

Officials with the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union accused county prosecutors and law enforcement of running a ?smear campaign? in their investigation into the shooting of Steve Foley. ACLU officials said information about Foley's past run-ins with police should not have been included in a search warrant affidavit filed in San Diego Superior Court on Thursday. They also said it was inappropriate for the investigator in the District Attorney's Office who wrote the affidavit to make a reference to ?roid rage,? a term used for uncontrollable outbursts and violence exhibited by some steroid users, according to the document. ?It is a catchy way to smear Mr. Foley,? said Kevin Keenan, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego and Imperial counties, during a news conference.

Prosecutors Suspect Foley Was On Steroids

Oct 23, 2014 4:55 AM

Prosecutors say they suspect Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was on steroids when he was shot three times by an off-duty police officer. "His history of aggressive and even violent contact with law enforcement indicates the possibility of more than mere alcohol involvement," wrote criminal investigator Dan Nordell in an affidavit for a search warrant. "(Steroids) can cause erratic behavior in those that use them. This has been given names like 'roid rage for the uncontrollable outbursts and violence experienced by some users."

Volek Could End Up In San Diego

Oct 23, 2014 4:55 AM

When Titans No. 3 quarterback Billy Volek travels to San Diego this weekend, he may be sticking around a while. Volek said the Chargers are one of the teams who contacted the Titans after he asked to be traded last month. Volek said he thinks there's a chance something could happen next week, after the Titans and Chargers play on Sunday. "I know that they have a lot of interest. I know that they have contacted Floyd Reese and they contacted my agent," Volek said. "There is an opportunity for me there and it is a bridge I'll cross when it presents itself."

Porter Denies Rooting Against Raiders

Nov 27, 2014 6:23 AM

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Jerry Porter was seen cheering a sack of Aaron Brooks on Monday night. "The San Francisco Chronicle report was not true," Porter told ESPN's Colleen Dominguez. "I wasn't even paying attention to the game. The fist-pumping was in response to some fans that were talking to me when I was sitting on the sidelines." Raiders coach Art Shell said he was unaware of the reported incident. "I havent heard anyone from organization say anything about it," Shell said Tuesday. "If it did happen I am disappointed. He will have to deal with teammates and other people."

Report: Off-Duty Officer Who Shot Foley Felt Trapped

Oct 23, 2014 4:55 AM

An off-duty police officer inadvertently was "trapped" in a suburban cul-de-sac without backup before he shot Chargers linebacker Steve Foley, a prosecutor said Thursday. Aaron Mansker, an officer with the Coronado Police Department, had decided to drop his pursuit because no other officers responded to his calls for help, but found himself blocked Sunday morning in the dead-end street where Foley lives, said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Jim Koerber.
