L.J. Smith, the six-year veteran tight end for the Eagles, has taken some lumps on and off the field this season. Smith suffered a concussion in Week Eight against the Falcons and has been bashed by fans for his lack of production considering the $4.5 million he'll earn this season. "Around here, the voices that are heard are the loud ones in the media," Smith said. "This is a media-driven town. I understand that. I knew what people would say after I got the contract. I knew what would happen if I didn't get off to a great start. I was going to have to have a great season, or I was going to hear it. And so far, that's what it's been. "But people don't understand the game. They don't watch films. They just look at the stats. But it's also how you're used. You can be a great player, but if you're not used right, what can you do? I'm not saying I'm not being used right, but if you asked the coach, he'd probably say he could have put me in some better situations. Would I like to get five or six balls a game? Absolutely. But ..." He has only 12 catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns in 2008. "People look at the stats and say, 'Oh, you only had two catches,'" Smith added. "Well, maybe there was a reason for that. Against San Francisco, I had one catch, and it was for a touchdown, but I knew what people would say, 'Why only one catch?' One catch, even for a touchdown, doesn't cut it around here."
