Chad Pennington gained an early lead on Kellen Clemens in the race to be named the starting quarterback of the Jets on Saturday, according to The Associated Press. Pennington's squad beat that of Clemens in the team's green-white scrimmage. Chad went 8-for-14 with 115 yards and a touchdown while Kellen was 8-for-22 with 137 yards and a 55-yard connection with rookie tight end Dustin Keller. "That's up to Coach," Pennington said of the starting race. "I'm pleased with how our whole team did. We came out here and competed really well." New York will play Cleveland in their first preseason game on Thursday. "It's tough to give any real assessment," Coach Eric Mangini said. "As I'm watching this game, part of it is watching those guys, but part of it is watching all the other new guys. Part of it is trying to look at the scheme and how those guys are executing the scheme. There's a lot of new faces to look at. That's really going to come more from the tape than this first look."
