Brock Purdy has been ruled out by the San Francisco 49ers for their Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints due to a turf toe variant and an issue in his non-throwing shoulder. Purdy is expected to miss two to five due to the injuries.

The turf toe injury is considered more serious and will need more time to properly heal.

The 49ers will start Mac Jones in place of Purdy. Jones spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars as backup quarterback to Trevor Lawrence. Jones has extensive starting experience with the New England Patriots.

Purdy signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers in the offseason with $181 million in guaranteed money. Purdy didn't make the NFL's Top 100 list for 2025 after ranking No. 28 in 2024. Purdy ranks No. 19 amongst quarterbacks on The Ringer's list.
