Jonathan Vilma's comments yesterday about dogfighting weren't as dismissive as the recent remarks by the Redskins' Clinton Portis, a friend and former college teammate, but the Jets linebacker suffered a foot-in-mouth moment when he compared dogfighting to horse racing. In an interview with WFAN's Chris Russo, Vilma expressed indifference toward dogfighting, an illegal blood sport that has made headlines because of the Michael Vick controversy. When asked if he has a problem with dogfighting, Vilma replied, "To be honest with you, I never looked at it one way or another. What people do is ...of course dog fighting is much more extreme, but you can equate it to horse racing. You have animal activists that (condemn) horse racing. They feel horses are being tested brutally, whatever the situation is. I'm not an animal activist. To each his own." Vilma, who appeared on the show to promote his youth football camp next month on Long Island, said "everyone (in the NFL) has heard about dogfighting. Whether you choose to participate or not, that's your decision. I'm not here to condone it or accept it. It's been there for awhile....Virginia says it's a felony. Hey, it's a felony. There's nothing to argue there. It is what it is."
