The NFL has approved a proposal to guarantee each team a possession in overtime during the playoffs.

The rule for regular-season games, which allows the team with the first possession to win if it scores a touchdown, will remain unchanged.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime of the Divisional Round with an opening-possession touchdown.

Since the previous playoff format was implemented in 2010, seven of 12 overtime games have been won on the opening possession, and 10 of those 12 were won by the team that won the coin toss.
